Chapter 15: Sunset on the Estate

The autumn sun dipped below the tree line of the Moretti estate, washing the grand stone facade in a warm, amber glow. Inside the mansion study, the heavy mahogany conference table was cleared of the ransacked papers and glass shards, replaced instead by fresh legal briefs, corporate restructuring documents, and three crystal glasses of sparkling cider.
The emergency board meeting had concluded an hour earlier. The three corrupt directors had resigned under threat of immediate criminal indictment, their shares frozen pending federal forfeiture. Seated at the head of the table was my father, looking healthy and revitalized in a tailored charcoal blazer, while across from him sat Julian Vance. The hostility that had once defined their corporate rivalry had dissolved into a quiet, hard-earned mutual respect.
"Well, Mr. Vance," my father said, raising his crystal glass toward Julian across the polished wood. "It appears I owe you an apology. I always thought you were just another corporate shark waiting to tear the foundation apart."
Julian lifted his glass in response, a genuine, relaxed smile touching the corners of his mouth. "And I thought you were an untouchable tyrant, Mr. Moretti. Turns out we both had some blind spots—though I suspect Miss Sophia and her dog deserve most of the credit for correcting ours."
I stood by the tall arched windows, looking out over the sprawling lawn where Brutus was lazily chasing a red rubber ball across the manicured grass. His spiked collar caught the dying rays of the sun, gleaming like polished silver against his black coat. The giant dog stopped, turned his massive head toward the study window, and let out a soft, contented huff that seemed to echo right through the glass.
Julian stood up, walking over to stand beside me at the window. He didn't say anything for a long moment, simply watching the dog bound back across the lawn toward the terrace steps.
"I'm stepping down as liquidator," Julian murmured quietly, looking down at me with an unreadable, softened expression in his dark eyes. "Your father offered me a permanent seat on the managing trust. Looks like I'll be sticking around the estate for a while longer."

"Only if you promise to keep bringing Brutus his favorite treats," I replied, a small smile playing on my lips.
Julian laughed—a low, genuine sound that completely erased the cold corporate persona he had worn the day we first met. He reached out, gently resting his hand over mine on the wooden window sill, and together we watched the evening shadows stretch long and peaceful across the Moretti grounds.
