Chapter 8: The Legal Ambush

The heavy oak doors pushed open to reveal Arthur Vance, the family's senior legal counsel, stepping into the sunroom with an air of practiced corporate arrogance. He carried a sleek leather briefcase tucked tightly under his arm, his tailored gray suit immaculate and unwrinkled. Behind him, Claire hovered in the hallway, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, watching with the predatory satisfaction of someone who believed she had finally cornered her prey. Arthur offered a tight, condescending smile that didn't reach his cold, professional eyes as he approached Julian's wheelchair with deliberate slowness.

"Good afternoon, Julian," Arthur said smoothly, setting his briefcase down on a small mahogany side table and flipping the brass latches with a crisp snap. "I trust your physical therapy is progressing adequately. However, we have urgent matters of estate governance that require your immediate signature. Time-sensitive amendments to the family trust, to be precise."

Julian did not invite the lawyer to sit. He simply locked his hands together over his lap, his posture straightening in the chair with an icy dignity that immediately wiped the smug smile from Arthur's face. "My estate governance is entirely stable, Arthur. And I am not signing anything without my personal care team present and reviewing every clause."

Arthur cast a dismissive, patronizing glance in my direction, scoffing softly. "Surely, Julian, you aren't consulting a private duty nurse on matters of corporate trusts and legal proxy amendments? Nurse Vance's expertise is strictly confined to dispensing pills and adjusting pillows, not interpreting complex civil law."

I stepped forward, placing myself squarely beside Julian's right shoulder, refusing to be relegated to the background. "Mr. Vance's medical proxy dictates that any document affecting his physical or mental well-being must be cleared by his primary healthcare provider to ensure he is acting under zero duress," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the sunroom. "And given that Dr. Sterling isn't present, and these documents haven't crossed my desk for a clinical assessment, you are violating state health codes just by bringing them into this room."

Arthur blinked, visibly startled by my pushback, and turned quickly to Julian for backup. "Julian, control your staff. This obstruction is entirely unacceptable."

"She is entirely correct," Julian stated, his voice dropping an octave, ringing with absolute authority. "Leave the briefcase, Arthur, or take it with you. But nothing is being signed today, tomorrow, or any time in the near future."

Claire pushed past the doorway, her face flushing with furious red rage as she realized their ambush had completely failed. "You are being manipulated, Julian! She's filling your head with lies to secure a stake in the estate!"

"Enough," Julian commanded, raising a single hand. "Get out of my sight, both of you. Before I have security escort you off the property."

Arthur slammed his briefcase shut, snatching it from the table with a scowl, and dragged a trembling Claire back down the hallway, leaving us in silence.
