Chapter 10: Midnight Crisis

The storm outside had escalated into a violent tempest, rattling the heavy glass windows of the East Wing bedroom as sheets of rain lashed against the stone facade. I sat at the small mahogany desk by the window, reviewing Julian's updated neurological charts under the soft glow of a single brass reading lamp. Suddenly, a sharp, ragged gasp echoed from the adjoining bed, followed by the frantic rustle of bedsheets. I dropped my pen instantly, spinning around to see Julian struggling to sit up, his hands clutching desperately at his chest as his breathing turned shallow, wheezing, and dangerously rapid.

"Julian!" I cried out, abandoning the desk in a single bound and rushing to the side of the bed.

His face was deathly pale, a sheen of cold sweat slicking his forehead as his fingers clawed weakly at his white dress shirt. His heart monitor, resting on the nightstand, began emitting a frantic, high-pitched warning beep, its digital display flashing erratic, elevated numbers. A pulmonary spasm—triggered either by the mounting stress of the past few weeks or a delayed reaction to the residual sedatives in his system.

"I can't... catch my breath," Julian choked out, his voice a breathless whisper as his eyes locked onto mine with stark, terrifying vulnerability.

"Look at me, Julian. Don't fight the breath, just match mine," I instructed, my voice firm, calm, and stripped of all panic. I reached for the oxygen tank stationed beside the wardrobe, opening the regulator valve with practiced, lightning-fast precision, and slipped the nasal cannula over his ears, adjusting the flow rate until the hiss filled the quiet room. "In through the nose. Hold it. Out slowly."

I pressed my hands against his chest, feeling the erratic, hammering beat beneath his ribs, and began guiding his breathing cadence with steady, rhythmic pressure. For three agonizing minutes, the world narrowed down to the hiss of oxygen, the steady beep of the monitor, and the desperate friction of his struggle. Slowly, agonizingly, the frantic spike on the screen began to level out. The color started creeping back into his graying lips as his lungs finally expanded with clean, unhindered air.

Julian slumped back against the pillows, his chest heaving as he closed his eyes in sheer exhaustion, sweat soaking his dark hair. He didn't let go of me; his hand reached out blindly across the white sheets, his fingers wrapping tightly around my wrist with a desperate, anchoring grip.

"I thought... I wasn't going to wake up," he whispered hoarsely, his thumb brushing against my pulse point.

I pulled a chair close to the mattress, sitting down and wrapping my free hand over his, letting the warmth of my palm chase away the lingering chill of the crisis. "You're here, Julian. I've got you. I'm not going anywhere."

We sat in the dim, storm-lit silence of the bedroom, the terror of the night fading slowly into an unbreakable, quiet certainty between us.
