Chapter 13: The Escape

The chaotic flash of camera bulbs and the sudden uproar of shocked whispers from the elite donors dissolved into chaos the moment Claire tried to grab Julian’s arm.

"Get away from him!" I stepped firmly between Claire and Julian, my hand catching her wrist with enough sudden authority to freeze her in her tracks. The startled gasp that escaped her lips echoed loudly in the stunned silence of the ballroom.

Julian didn't hesitate. With my arm securely locked around his waist to bear his weight, he took another steady, deliberate step forward away from the dais and toward the grand marble foyer. Every pair of eyes in the room tracked our movement. The three wealthy guests in black tuxedos who had witnessed the foyer confrontation weeks ago now stood paralyzed, watching the absolute dismantling of the Vance dynasty in real time.

"This foundation is dissolved, effective immediately," Julian announced, his voice echoing off the marble pillars with unmistakable finality. "Every fraudulent trust, every fabricated medical document, and every threat made under this roof is now part of an ongoing federal and civil investigation. Our association with the Vance name ends tonight."

Claire screamed something incoherent behind us, her pristine social facade entirely crumbling into desperate, hysterical rage, but we didn't look back. We moved steadily through the grand archway, leaving the dazzling chandeliers, the suffocating opulence, and the gilded cage of the estate far behind us.

Outside, the cool night air hit our faces like a long-awaited release. A sleek, unassuming black sedan idled at the edge of the circular drive, its headlights cutting through the heavy mist rolling in from the coast. I opened the passenger door, helping Julian slide carefully into the front seat with a quiet, practiced ease. The familiar smell of leather and rain filled the interior as I closed the door and hurried around to the driver's side.

As I shifted the car into drive and pulled away from the grand iron gates for the very last time, Julian let out a long, ragged breath, resting his head back against the headrest. He reached across the center console, his fingers brushing against mine as I kept both hands on the wheel.

"We did it," he whispered, a genuine, unburdened smile finally breaking across his face.

"We're just getting started," I replied, steering us out onto the open highway toward a quiet horizon where no one could ever reach us again.
