Chapter 9 - The Staircase Incident And The Security Logs

The false calm of the afternoon shattered just as the dinner hour approached. We were gathered in the formal sitting room near the grand foyer when the heavy front doors banged open, admitting a gust of cold wind and rain. Eleanor stood in the entryway, her trench coat soaked, flanked by two burly men in plain suits whom she must have hired as private escorts to bypass the security gates.

"Don't you dare move!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing off the marble floors and bouncing up toward the crystal chandelier. She threw her handbag onto the floor and stumbled dramatically backward against the base of the grand staircase, letting out a sharp, theatrical gasp. "She attacked me! In my own hallway! Marisa, you vicious little fraud!"

Valentina whimpered, instantly burying her face in the folds of my skirt. I stepped forward, my heart hammering against my ribs, though my mind remained ice-cold. "Eleanor, you broke into this house. No one touched you."

"Liar!" Eleanor cried out, sliding deliberately down the marble riser until she was sitting on the bottom step, clutching her arm as if it were broken. She looked up toward the upper landing where Julian had just emerged, drawn by the commotion. "Julian! Thank God you're here. This creature and her bastard child attacked me the moment I came in to retrieve my personal jewelry. Look at what she's done!"

The two private escorts shifted uncomfortably near the open front doors, clearly regretting the theater they had been hired to witness. Julian stood at the top of the marble stairs, his hands resting on the polished wooden banister. He didn't rush. He didn't shout. His expression was a terrifying, frozen mask of absolute fury.

"Eleanor," Julian said, his voice cutting through the foyer like a razor blade. "Get up off the floor."

"Julian, she shoved me!" Eleanor sobbed, forcing a tear to roll down her powdered cheek. "Call the police! Have them arrested!"

"I don't need to call the police," Julian replied calmly, descending the marble steps one measured stride at a time. He reached the bottom landing, stepping right past Eleanor without looking down at her, and walked over to the antique wall-mounted intercom panel by the study doors. He tapped the screen twice and pulled up the real-time security archive.

"The foyer cameras record in high definition, Eleanor," Julian continued, his voice dangerously quiet. "Including audio. They capture every word spoken from the moment the perimeter gate opens to the second you stumble backward onto the stairs all by yourself."

Eleanor’s theatrical crying abruptly stopped. Her breath hitched, and the crimson flush rushed back into her neck and face. She scrambled up from the marble floor, her high-end designer boots slipping slightly on the polished stone.

"You're calling your own wife a liar over a hired servant?" Eleanor hissed, her mask completely disintegrating as she pointed a shaking finger at me.

"You haven't been my wife in the eyes of the law or any decent human standard for years," Julian said flatly. He turned to the two bewildered men in suits by the door. "If you wish to be paid for your day's work, escort her off this property immediately. If she returns, my legal team will ensure you are both named as co-conspirators in an ongoing criminal fraud investigation."

The two men didn't wait for a second invitation. They each grabbed an elbow of Eleanor’s trench coat and half-carried, half-dragged her out through the massive oak doors into the pouring rain, her furious screams echoing out into the driveway until the heavy wood swung shut with a resounding, permanent slam.
