Chapter 11 - The Foundation Portrait Protocol

The annual foundation gala loomed like a glittering deadline on the horizon, casting a heavy shadow of high-society scrutiny over the mansion. By late morning, the east gallery was already crowded with event coordinators, caterers, and public relations consultants holding clipboards. Julian stood near the tall arched windows, reviewing the official seating arrangements with his lead coordinator while I helped Valentina trace pencil sketches on a small notepad at the mahogany side table.

Footsteps echoed sharply across the marble floor. Eleanor swept into the room, draped in an emerald silk dress that seemed designed to command every corner of the space. Her eyes bypassed Julian entirely, zeroing in on Valentina and me with a look of pure, concentrated frost.

"Julian," Eleanor said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as she glided toward the podium where the seating chart lay. "I see we have a logistical oversight to correct before the press arrives this evening. The official family portrait session for the annual report cannot possibly include staff. It would ruin the brand integrity of the foundation."

Julian did not look up from his papers immediately. He finished signing a margin note with his fountain pen, capped it with a crisp click, and finally raised his eyes. The expression on his face was terrifyingly calm.

"There is no logistical oversight, Eleanor," Julian replied, his voice level and devoid of warmth. "Marisa and Valentina are attending the gala as my guests of honor. The family portrait will feature all three of us."

Eleanor’s smile faltered, the micro-expression of absolute shock rippling across her features before she caught herself. "You cannot be serious. Exposing society to an illegitimate child and a maid—do you have any idea what that will do to your board approval ratings? The press will have a field day."

"The press can report whatever facts they choose," Julian said, stepping away from the desk and closing the distance between them until he towered over her. "And as for the board, they will learn the truth tonight as well. My personal life is no longer subject to your public relations management."

Eleanor stared at him, her chest rising and falling beneath the emerald silk. She realized, with sudden terrifying clarity, that her threats held no weight anymore. Without a word, she turned on her heel and stormed out of the gallery, leaving a trail of expensive perfume in her wake.

I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. Valentina looked up from her notepad, clutching her stuffed rabbit against her chest. Julian turned back to us, his hardened expression instantly softening as he walked over and crouched down beside Valentina's chair.

"Everything is going to be just fine," Julian whispered, brushing a stray dark curl from her forehead. "Tonight, we show the world who we really are."
