Chapter 13 - The Severed Ties

The green room backstage was quiet, insulated from the fading echoes of the ballroom murmurs by heavy velvet drapes and thick oak doors. I sat on the edge of a velvet-upholstered settee, holding Valentina close as she softly stroked the worn ear of her stuffed rabbit. The heavy oak door swung open with a muffled click, and two men in tailored charcoal suits stepped inside, carrying slim leather briefcases.
Julian followed them closely, his expression tight with a grim, exhausted finality. Behind him, Eleanor walked in, her emerald gown looking suddenly heavy and restrictive. She carried a single designer overnight bag, her jaw set in a mask of bitter, silent fury.
"The legal separation papers have been filed and registered with the county clerk," the lead attorney said, his voice flat and professional as he placed a thick manila folder on the mahogany vanity table. "All residential access rights to the main estate are formally revoked, effective immediately. Financial accounts tied to your name have been frozen pending the forensic audit."
Eleanor didn't look at the lawyers. Her gaze locked directly onto me, burning with a venomous intensity that defied the absolute defeat of her position.
"You think you've won something," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You're nothing more than a temporary fixture in a broken house. He'll grow tired of playing savior by the time the winter snow sets in."
"That's enough, Eleanor," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a cold authority that brooked no further argument. He stepped between her and the settee, physically shielding us from her presence. "Your car is waiting at the south portico. The driver has instructions to take you to your city apartment. Do not attempt to contact the estate or anyone inside it ever again."

Eleanor held his gaze for one final, bitter second, realizing that every avenue of manipulation had been entirely permanently sealed off. With a sharp, defiant toss of her head, she turned sharply on her heel and swept out of the green room, the heavy door clicking shut behind her with a definitive, hollow sound.
The room exhaled a collective tension. The lawyers quietly packed their briefs and departed, leaving Julian, Valentina, and me alone in the quiet sanctuary of the backstage suite. Julian let out a long, shuddering breath, the lines of stress around his eyes finally softening as he walked over to us.
