Chapter 9 - Boardroom Emergency Session

The fortieth-floor boardroom of Moretti Holdings was a tomb of polished mahogany, smoked glass, and cold morning light. Below the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city skyline of gray concrete and steel stretched out beneath a heavy, sulfurous dawn fog. Around the massive oval conference table sat the seven members of the executive board, their faces stiff and unsmiling in their bespoke morning suits.

At the head of the table sat Vanessa Bellini, her white pantsuit pristine, her fingers steepled before her as she reviewed a leather-bound folio. To her right sat three senior vice presidents who had owed their loyalty to her family for over a decade. The heavy oak doors at the far end of the room remained firmly shut, guarding the empty chair at the center of the table where Luca usually sat with quiet, absolute authority.

"The time is six-ten," Vanessa announced, her voice ringing clear and hard through the silent room. She didn't bother looking up from her papers. "Under Section Nine of the corporate charter, if the Chief Executive Officer fails to be present within ten minutes of a called emergency quorum regarding material fiduciary conflict, the board is empowered to enact a temporary suspension of executive powers by majority vote."

Old Mr. Sterling, the senior board member whose family had partnered with Luca’s father decades ago, cleared his throat nervously. "Vanessa, are we entirely certain this is necessary? Luca has steered this firm through record growth for five consecutive years. Suspending his veto over a localized residential clearance on Maple Street seems... disproportionate."

"Disproportionate?" Vanessa snapped, finally raising her dark eyes to pin the old man in her crosshairs. "He is actively dismantling our municipal development pipeline to appease a stubborn tenant who happens to be his estranged mother. If we let sentimentality dictate our portfolio, our investors will pull fifty million dollars by noon. Do you want to explain that to the shareholders, Sterling?"

Silence settled over the boardroom like a lead blanket. Sterling lowered his gaze, unable to meet her cold, calculated stare.

"The motion has been formally tabled," Vanessa said, standing up from her leather chair and resting her palms flat against the mahogany table. "All in favor of invoking Section Nine and stripping Luca Moretti of his emergency veto power, raise your hands."

Three hands went up immediately—her loyal vice presidents. Sterling hesitated, his hand trembling slightly over the polished wood as he began to raise it toward the smoked-glass ceiling.

Before his fingers could fully extend, a sharp, metallic click echoed through the boardroom.

The heavy oak double doors didn't just open—they swung wide with a sudden, violent crack that made every executive at the table jump in their seats.
