Chapter 4 - The Dressing Suite Aftermath

The private dressing suite attached to Vanessa’s bedroom in the Moretti estate smelled of expensive French perfume and burnt nerves. Wardrobe trunks stood open across the plush white carpet, their contents spilling out in chaotic heaps of silk gowns, designer shoes, and velvet garment bags. The crystal wall sconces cast a harsh, unforgiving light over the disordered room, highlighting the sharp lines of tension in Vanessa’s posture as she paced across the floor.

Vanessa slammed a heavy leather jewelry box shut, the brass clasp snapping down with a harsh metallic sound that echoed off the high ceilings. Her manicured hands shook slightly as she dropped it into a side pocket of a calfskin weekender bag. She paused, catching her breath, feeling the suffocating weight of a crumbling future closing in around her.

"He's throwing it all away," she muttered to the empty room, her reflection glaring back at her with fierce resentment from the illuminated vanity mirror. "Years of careful planning, of positioning ourselves at the very top of city society, all jeopardized for a bowl of peasant noodles and a stubborn old woman in a cheap brown coat who refuses to die quietly."

Her phone buzzed violently against the glass tabletop, vibrating a rhythm that set her teeth on edge. She snatched it up, her screen illuminating an encrypted text message from her contact at the municipal zoning board: *District 4 demolition permits revoked by CEO direct order. Hard stop.*

A low hiss of disbelief escaped her lips. Vanessa threw the phone against the far wall with all her remaining strength. It shattered into three distinct pieces against the mahogany baseboard, the screen fracturing into a spiderweb of dead pixels.

"You think a wooden spoon and a sob story are going to save you, old woman?" she whispered to the empty air, her teeth clenched so hard her jaw ached with a sharp, throbbing pain. "You think you can just walk into our dining room and unravel everything I built?"

She walked over to her mahogany writing desk, pulled open a hidden velvet-lined drawer that required a biometric key, and withdrew a thick manila folder labeled *Moretti Holdings Private Ledger — 2018-2023*. It contained records of every leveraged buyout, every quiet payoff to local aldermen, and every questionable zoning waiver Luca had ever signed to secure his first major downtown skyscrapers—documents she had quietly copied and stored away over the past two years *just in case* a contingency plan was ever required. Insurance, she had called it. Now, it was a weapon.

If Luca wanted to play the dutiful, broken-hearted son and ruin his own empire for a sentimental memory, she would simply ensure there was no empire left for him to inherit. The board of directors would have something very interesting to review before sunrise.

She zipped her weekender bag with a vicious yank, grabbed her cashmere coat off the valet stand, and walked out of the suite without casting a single glance back at the opulent room she had expected to rule as a queen.
