Chapter 8 - Emma's Quarters in the Mansion

The lock on the heavy oak door of the basement staff quarters clicked twice, sealing Emma inside her tiny, windowless room. The air smelled of old paper, laundry detergent, and damp concrete. She dropped her keys onto the small nightstand, her hands shaking so badly she could barely unbutton the cuffs of her maid’s dress. She sat down on the edge of her narrow cot, pulling a small, battered laptop from beneath her pillow.

The documents Vanessa had discarded weren't just in the hallway wastebasket; Emma had scooped them up into her apron pocket before heading out to Maple Street. Now, spread across her narrow wooden desk under the harsh glow of a single brass lamp, the digital copies of the board's secret ledger glowed against the screen. Financial transfers, shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands, and wire receipts routed directly from Moretti Holdings to municipal zoning inspectors in District 4. It was a complete blueprint of corporate corruption.

She knew the risks. If security guards caught her accessing the internal encrypted server to upload these files to an outside address, she would be out on the street by dawn—or worse, facing criminal charges fabricated by a legal team with unlimited resources. But as she thought of Mrs. Caruso sitting in that greasy diner with her silver tray and her quiet dignity, Emma knew she couldn't just delete the files and pretend she was invisible.

Her fingers danced across the keyboard, encrypting the entire archive into a secure, decentralized cloud packet. She added a single text file to the folder, addressed to a trusted local investigative reporter at the *City Chronicle* who had been trying to crack the Maple Street expansion for two years. With a final, decisive click of the mouse, the transfer progress bar shot across the screen from zero to one hundred percent. *Sent.*

Just as the upload confirmation blinked green, a heavy knock echoed against her outer door.

"Emma?" A deep, gravelly voice cut through the wood. Luca. "Open up."

Emma scrambled off the bed, smoothing down her apron as she hurried to the door and unlocked the bolt. Luca stood in the narrow basement corridor, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows, his face etched with a fatigue that went far beyond lack of sleep.

"Mr. Moretti," she said, her heart hammering against her ribs. "I thought you were still upstairs."

"I need every acquisition file from the last three years relating to the District 4 residential blocks," Luca said, stepping into the tiny room without waiting for an invitation. His dark eyes scanned the desk, lingering for a fraction of a second on the laptop screen before rising back to meet hers. "Vanessa called an emergency board meeting for six a.m. She thinks she can strip my executive veto before sunrise. I need to know every name on her payroll."
