Chapter 9 - Whispers in the Archives

The estate's basement archive was a forgotten tomb of ledgers, discarded furniture, and outdated security logs. Dust motes danced lazily in the dim amber glow of a single overhead bulb hanging from a frayed cord. The air smelled of old paper, damp stone, and decades of forgotten family secrets.

I slipped through the heavy iron door, pulling it shut behind me with barely a whisper of sound. The brass key felt heavy and sharp in my palm as I knelt before the iron-banded record chest tucked away in the deepest corner of the alcove. My hands were shaking slightly as I pressed the key into the rusted padlock. With a firm, silent turn, the internal mechanism clicked open.

Inside lay stacks of old financial ledgers, legal deeds bearing the Moretti family crest, and faded photographs protected by translucent vellum paper. I pulled out a collection of partnership documents dating back nearly a decade. The names on the legal filings stopped me dead in my tracks.

It wasn't a kidnapping record. It wasn't the file of a prisoner bought and sold by a ruthless syndicate boss.

The documents listed Luca Moretti and a woman named Sofia Vance as equal co-founders of the maritime shipping logistics firm that had laid the foundation for the entire Moretti empire. Beside the legal text was an old photograph: Luca smiling—truly smiling—with an arm around a dark-haired woman who looked strikingly like the pianist from the gala, sharing a laugh over blueprints of a harbor dock. A dock labeled *Blue Harbor*.

"You're a very thorough cleaner, Rachel," a voice murmured from the shadows of the archive entrance.

I gasped, dropping the photograph as I scrambled backward against the stone wall. Luca stepped out from the darkness, his hands tucked casually into the pockets of his dark trousers, his face unreadable in the dim light. He looked down at the scattered papers on the stone floor, his dark eyes lingering on the old photograph of him and Sofia.

"You shouldn't be down here," Luca said quietly, stepping closer until the single overhead bulb cast a harsh shadow over his features. "These files belong to a ghost who doesn't exist anymore."

"She isn't a ghost, Mr. Moretti," I said, my voice trembling but defiant as I pointed down at the ledger. "She was your partner. She built this empire with you. Why is she locked behind a reinforced door upstairs?"

Luca didn't yell. He let out a long, slow breath, his shoulders slumping fractionally as the rigid mask of the ruthless mafia boss finally slipped away, revealing a raw, exhausted ache underneath.
