Chapter 13 - The Race Against Time at the Threshold

The heavy oak door of the second-floor landing felt like a fortress wall as I pressed my ear against the grain, listening intently to the hurried footsteps echoing up the main staircase. Vanessa Bellini's threats from the kitchen hadn't been idle posturing; within hours of her confrontation with Luca, she had begun conducting her own erratic investigation into the restricted quarters of the estate. While Luca was away attending a tense syndicate meeting across town, Vanessa had seized the opportunity to bypass estate security, dragging a disgruntled footman behind her with a master ring of keys. My heart raced as I realized she was heading directly for Sofia's locked sanctuary. If she managed to turn that key, years of carefully guarded secrets would be violently exposed, destroying Sofia and triggering a war that would tear the Moretti empire apart.

I slipped out of the linen closet, moving with silent urgency down the dim corridor until I intercepted Vanessa just yards away from the heavy wooden door. She stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits as she clutched a heavy brass skeleton key in her fist. "Out of my way, Rachel," she hissed, her voice vibrating with malice. "I know what Luca is hiding behind this door. I heard the rumors years ago before he locked himself in this fortress. I am going to end this charade once and for all." The footman standing behind her looked away nervously, clearly uncomfortable with being dragged into a power struggle between the mafia boss's fiancée and a humble maid.

"You have no idea what you're walking into, Miss Bellini," I said firmly, planting my feet on the carpet and refusing to budge an inch. "If you open that door, you aren't just exposing a secret—you're signing a death warrant for everyone in this house, starting with yourself." Vanessa let out a shrill, dismissive laugh, stepping forward with the key raised toward the ancient lock. "Step aside before I have security throw you into the county jail," she snapped, shoving her shoulder against mine with surprising force. I stumbled back against the wall, but as the key slid into the keyhole with a sharp metallic clatter, I lunged forward, grabbing her wrist with both hands to stop the mechanism from turning.

A violent struggle ensued in the dim hallway, the sound of our frantic breathing echoing off the paneled walls. Vanessa shrieked in outrage, trying to wrench her arm free while striking out with her free hand, but I held on with the desperate strength of someone who had nothing left to lose. "Let go of me, you insolent rat!" she screamed, her perfectly styled updo coming undone as she thrashed against my grip. Just as the heavy brass key began to turn within the lock, the distant rumble of a heavy engine idling in the courtyard below sent a sudden, electric shock through the air. Luca had returned early.
