Chapter 14 - The Shattered Alliance and the Final Breach

The front doors of the estate slammed open downstairs with a force that rattled the crystal chandeliers throughout the foyer, followed by the heavy, measured tread of Luca Moretti's footsteps climbing the grand staircase. In the second-floor hallway, the struggle froze instantly. Vanessa's hand remained trembling on the brass key protruding from Sofia's door, her chest heaving as she turned her terrified, defiant gaze toward the stairwell. The footman bolted down the opposite corridor without a word, leaving the three of us suspended in a suffocating silence that felt heavier than lead. Luca appeared at the head of the stairs, his dark eyes sweeping over the scene with terrifying, icy clarity.

"What is the meaning of this?" Luca's voice was a low, lethal whisper that cut straight to the bone. He didn't raise his voice, yet the sheer fury vibrating beneath his words made the air in the corridor hard to breathe. Vanessa immediately dropped her hand from the door, spinning around with a tearful, theatrical expression of betrayal. "Luca, thank God," she sobbed, rushing toward him with outstretched arms. "Your maid—she's insane! She's been harboring a squatter in these restricted rooms, conspiring behind your back! I came up here to protect you, to save your reputation from whatever plot she's running!" She clutched at the lapel of his tuxedo jacket, looking up at him with manufactured anguish.

Luca didn't embrace her. He stood like a statue, his dark gaze shifting slowly from Vanessa's trembling hands back to me, standing resolute against the wall with my uniform collar slightly askew. Then, without a single word of comfort, he gently but firmly peeled Vanessa's fingers away from his jacket. "You had no business on this floor, Vanessa," he said, his tone utterly devoid of warmth. Vanessa stepped back, her jaw dropping in sheer disbelief as the full weight of his rejection settled over her. "After everything I've done for you? After my family stood by your syndicates? You're choosing a maid over your own fiancée?" she shrieked, her voice cracking with wounded pride and hysteria.

"Our engagement was a business arrangement from the very beginning, and you just breached the core contract," Luca replied coldly, his eyes flashing with dark resolve. "Pack your things. My men will have your belongings at the gates within the hour." Vanessa stared at him as if seeing a monster for the first time, her face pale with humiliation before she turned and stormed down the hall, sobbing curses into the empty air. When she was gone, the heavy silence settled back over the corridor. Luca exhaled a long, shaky breath, looking at me with a complicated mix of exhaustion and grudging respect. He reached out, took the brass key from the lock, and unlocked the door to Sofia's room himself.
