Chapter 8 - Confrontation Under the Chandelier

The rhythmic *tap, tap, tap* of the silver-headed cane stopped directly outside the double doors of the library. My blood turned to ice in my veins. Mateo stepped instantly in front of the reading table, his broad shoulders blocking the open safe and the spread of historical documents from view. His jaw was clenched tight, a muscle ticking violently in his cheek as he braced himself against the imminent intrusion.
The heavy walnut doors swung open without warning. Salvatore Vitiello stood in the doorway, leaning heavily on his silver-headed cane, dressed in a pristine dark vest and white shirt despite the predawn hour. His piercing gray eyes swept across the dim library, instantly locking onto Mateo, then shifting past him to rest directly on me standing beside the open wall safe. A dark, dangerous fury twisted the corners of his mouth into a tight line.
"So," Salvatore’s voice rasped through the silent room, carrying an authoritative chill that made the hair on my arms stand up. "The stray cat has found her way into the pantry. And you let her in, Mateo? Have you lost your mind entirely?"
"She was looking for answers that you buried a long time ago, Grandfather," Mateo replied steadily, not flinching an inch as he held his ground between the patriarch and the table. "It was time someone opened the safe."
Salvatore’s eyes flashed with genuine venom. He pointed the silver head of his cane directly at Mateo, his hand trembling slightly with suppressed rage. "You know nothing about what happened in fifty-four. That woman—that girl’s ancestor—nearly destroyed everything we built before the ink on the permits was even dry. She thought she could walk away with the deeds and leave us with nothing."

"That's a lie," I spoke up, stepping out from behind Mateo before he could stop me. My voice shook slightly, but I forced every ounce of steel I had learned from my mother into my tone. I pointed down at the open incorporation papers resting on the green blotter. "She didn't try to steal anything. She was an equal partner. You pushed her out, you falsified the termination records, and you stole her half of the enterprise."
Salvatore gasped, clutching his chest with his left hand as the color drained rapidly from his face. The silver-headed cane slipped from his grip, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor as his knees buckled. Mateo lunged forward just in time, catching his grandfather before he collapsed completely onto the parquet floor, shouting frantically for the estate medical staff.
