Chapter 11 - The Charity Gala Setup

The grand entrance of the upscale restaurant district was unrecognizable under the blinding flashbulbs of local photographers and the heavy presence of private security personnel. Valet attendants in crisp black uniforms rushed back and forth across the polished marble courtyard, parking luxury sedans as wealthy patrons dressed in designer gowns and tailored tuxedos walked up the red-carpeted steps toward the glittering glass doors. Above them, the massive crystal chandelier cast a brilliant, warm glow through the floor-to-ceiling windows, signaling the start of the annual Vitiello Foundation Gala.
I stepped out of a modest taxi at the corner of the block, drawing a deep breath of the crisp evening air. I was dressed not in a maid's uniform of black fabric and white lace this time, but in a sleek, elegant dark emerald evening gown that my mother had saved for a special occasion she never lived to see. My auburn-red hair was swept up into an intricate knot, held by a silver hairpin that caught the ambient streetlights.
As I approached the velvet ropes guarding the main entrance, two burly security guards in dark suits immediately stepped forward, crossing their arms to block my path.
"Invitation only, miss," the lead guard barked, his eyes scanning my appearance with practiced suspicion. "You'll need to use the service alley around back if you're with catering staff."
"I'm not with catering," a smooth, authoritative voice cut through the murmurs of the arriving crowd.
I turned slightly to see Mateo stepping out from the shadow of the portico. He wore a sharp black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt, his dark slicked-back hair catching the light, and his chest tattoos faintly visible beneath the open collar of his shirt. He walked directly up to the security barrier, his gaze fixed coldly on the guards until they visibly stiffened and stepped aside.
"She's with me," Mateo said, his tone leaving zero room for argument.
The lead guard swallowed hard, nodding respectfully as he unhooked the velvet rope. "Mr. Vitiello. Apologies. Please, go right ahead."
Mateo didn't offer his arm, but he walked close beside me as we crossed the threshold into the bustling, opulent foyer. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume, imported champagne, and roasted rosemary from the banquet kitchens. String quartet music drifted softly from the grand ballroom down the hall, where hundreds of guests were mingling beneath the towering ceilings and polished marble pillars.
"You actually came," Mateo murmured under his breath as we paused just outside the double doors of the ballroom, his eyes searching my face with a mixture of profound respect and lingering worry. "My grandfather is seated at the head table. He's furious that you slipped away yesterday, and he's doubling down on security."
May you like
"Let him double down," I replied, smoothing the fabric of my emerald gown and feeling the heavy outline of Arthur Vance's legal injunction papers resting inside my small clutch. "The past is about to walk right through those doors, Mateo. Are you ready to watch your family's empire change forever?"
Mateo looked down at me for a long, quiet second, a faint, resolute smile touching his lips. He reached out and gently brushed his knuckles against my bare forearm, sending a sudden, electric shiver through my skin. "I've been waiting for this fire to burn for ten years, Tessa. Open the doors."
