Chapter 14 - Fortified Gates

The heavy iron gates of the Ferrante estate swung open automatically as our battered town car approached, the security lights cutting sharp paths through the gathering storm clouds. Veto drove straight through, parking hard beside the main steps before cutting the engine. The quiet hum of the car dying was swallowed almost instantly by the sound of heavy rain beginning to lash against the windshield.

We sat in silence for a long moment, our breathing heavy in the confined space. Veto turned to me immediately, his hands framing my face with frantic, trembling urgency, checking every inch of me for injury.

"Are you hurt? Did the impact—"

"I'm fine," I interrupted, placing my hands over his to steady him. "The baby is fine. We're safe, Veto."

He let out a long, shuddering breath, pressing his forehead gently against mine before opening his door and stepping out into the pouring rain to help me out. Bruno bounded out of the back seat, shaking the water from his massive black coat before taking up a vigilant stance at the base of the stone steps.

By the time we crossed the threshold into the grand foyer, the estate's private security team was already assembled in the hall, their faces grim and alert. Veto didn't waste a breath on pleasantries. He issued sharp, direct orders, mobilizing every man to lock down the perimeter, sweep the access roads, and review the estate's exterior camera feeds for any lingering traces of the car that had tried to run us off the highway.

"They thought they could test us on the open road," Veto said, his voice hard as iron as he led me up the sweeping marble staircase toward the absolute safety of the master wing. "They forgot that inside these walls, every camera, every guard, and every lock answers only to me."

Inside the master suite, the warmth of the private hearth chased away the chill of the storm outside. Veto helped me change out of my damp clothes, moving with a tender, reverent care that contrasted sharply with the dangerous authority he had wielded downstairs. When I was settled comfortably against the plush pillows of the oversized bed, he sat beside me, his thumb tracing the line of my jaw where the lingering stress of the day had left its mark.

"The danger isn't over yet," I whispered, looking up into his dark, unwavering eyes.

"No," Veto agreed, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss against my forehead. "It isn't. But tomorrow, we end it permanently. And until then, no one touches you. No one ever touches this child again."
