Chapter 1 - The Weight of Stone

The wet pavement seeped through the thin fabric of my black maid uniform, chilling my knees where I knelt beside the metal garbage cans. My face throbbed, red-streaked and wet with tears I had tried too hard to swallow. Veto Ferrante stood above me, his long black overcoat brushing against the damp stone wall, while his large black Neapolitan Mastiff, Bruno, watched me with heavy, dark eyes. The overcast daylight cast soft shadows across the stone patio, reflecting off the puddles near my scuffed shoes. The climbing rose vines with their pale pink flowers clung stubbornly to the mortar behind us, indifferent to my humiliation.

"I'm sorry, sir. I'll go back to work immediately," I murmured, my voice cracking as I pressed both hands against my swelling abdomen, feeling the small, sharp kick of my child reminding me we were entirely vulnerable.

Veto's gaze was heavy, searching my tear-stained face with an intensity that made me want to shrink into the masonry. When he offered his large, steady hand, I took it without hesitation, letting him pull me to my feet. The warmth of his palm steadied my trembling knees.

"No one throws you out," he said, his voice low and uncompromising against the gray afternoon air. "No one. Your baby will never be invisible again."

He didn't let go of my hand immediately. Instead, he turned and led me away from the alleyway of the service patio, guiding me through the heavy oak doors and into the vast, warm interior of the Ferrante kitchen. The contrast was startling. The scent of roasting garlic and woodsmoke hit my senses immediately, wrapping around me like a comforting blanket. Bruno trotted faithfully at Veto's heel, his silver chain collar clinking softly with every measured step against the flagstone floor.

"Sit," Veto instructed, pointing to a heavy wooden chair beside the massive stone hearth where a bright fire crackled.

I sank into the seat, the heat instantly beginning to thaw the damp chill in my bones. I was a temporary hire, an agency girl meant to blend into the woodwork, yet here I sat at the center of the estate's domain, under the direct protection of its master. Veto stood before me for a long moment, his dark eyes softening just fractionally at the edges before he nodded to the empty kettle on the stove and walked out into the hall, leaving me alone with the dog. Bruno settled himself heavily across my feet, his massive bulk acting as a living anchor against the world outside.
