Chapter 13 - The Coastal Highway

The return drive to the main estate late that afternoon felt charged with a different kind of tension. The successful confrontation with the syndicate fixer had solved an immediate crisis, but it also signaled a dangerous shift: our sanctuary by the sea was no longer a secret. Veto drove the town car with one hand on the steering wheel, his other hand resting possessively over mine on the center console, while Bruno panted quietly in the back.

As we crossed the county line and hit the final stretch of the coastal highway leading back toward the city limits, the sky darkened into a bruised, heavy purple. A low rumble of thunder rolled across the horizon, matching the uneasy static humming in the back of my mind.

"Veto," I started, glancing out the passenger window as a sleek, dark SUV pulled out from a side road behind us, maintaining an unnervingly precise distance. "That car has been behind us since the diner outside the county line."

Veto didn't immediately look in the rear-view mirror, but his jaw tightened. His eyes flicked to the glass, taking in the vehicle's positioning. "I see it."

"Do you think it's the board?"

"The board lacks the stomach for roadside intimidation," Veto muttered, his voice dropping into a dangerous hum. "This is someone else. Someone who thought Vance's fall left a vacuum they could exploit."

Before I could process the warning, the dark SUV accelerated violently, surging forward until its front bumper slammed against our rear quarter panel with a sickening crunch of metal. Bruno let out a ferocious bark from the back seat, throwing his massive weight against the divider as the town car fishtailed dangerously on the wet asphalt.

"Hold onto the dash!" Veto shouted, shifting down with brutal precision and stamping on the accelerator. The engine roared, thrusting us forward, but the SUV lunged again, trying to force our vehicle toward the steep embankment that dropped away into the rocky surf below.

Fear clawed at my throat, but years of surviving on the margins had taught me how to keep breathing when the ground gave way. I braced my feet against the floorboards, wrapping my free arm tightly around my stomach while my other hand gripped the handle above the door. Veto fought the steering wheel with absolute, cold fury, his muscles straining beneath his dark sleeves as he anticipated the SUV's next move. With a sudden, calculated yank of the wheel, Veto slammed our brakes instead of accelerating, letting the heavier vehicle overshoot us by a fraction before sideswiping the guardrail. The SUV skidded out of control, its tires screeching against the wet pavement as it spun out into the opposite lane, leaving us clear to surge ahead toward the distant, iron-scrolled gates of the Ferrante estate.
