Chapter 9 - The Forged Audit and the Midnight Ledger

Sterling’s fingers brushed the edge of the proxy document, his manicured nails tapping against the embossed red wax seal. For three long seconds, the boardroom was entirely silent. The twelve senior executives seated around the polished mahogany table leaned forward, their eyes darting between Sterling’s darkening expression and the formal paperwork resting inches from his cuff.

"This is a cheap parlor trick," Sterling said, though his voice lacked its previous absolute authority. He forced a thin, brittle smile, looking around the room to rally his supporters. "Everett is completely incapacitated, lying unresponsive in a sterile room across town. He didn't sign this. This woman is a vagrant plucked off the streets to pull a pathetic stunt."

"Check the timestamp, Sterling," I said, my voice cutting through his bravado without a trace of hesitation. I opened my leather folder and slid a second sheaf of papers across the glass-smooth wood. "Notarized twenty minutes ago by Dr. Henderson via secure video link, witnessed by two independent nurses, and verified by the hospital's legal registrar. Everett is awake. And he specifically revoked your proxy."

Sterling’s eyes scanned the signatures. The smug veneer finally cracked completely, revealing the cold, frantic calculation underneath. He reached into his leather briefcase, pulling out a thick, bound financial audit. "It doesn't matter who sits in that chair. The company is already insolvent. Look at these ledgers. Everett bankrupted the Kane Foundation last quarter through reckless speculation. If we don't vote to liquidate assets right now, the board faces federal indictment for corporate fraud."

I stepped closer to the head of the table, my eyes locked on his. "Those audit dates are falsified. The transaction codes don't match the federal clearinghouse records. You generated these forged reports yesterday morning while Everett was still unconscious, trying to manufacture a crisis that would force an emergency liquidation."

Murmurs rippled through the boardroom. Several senior directors exchanged uneasy glances, pulling their laptops closer to verify the claim. Sterling slammed his hand down on the table, the sharp crack echoing off the glass walls.

"Guards!" Sterling roared toward the double doors. "Remove her! She is trespassing!"

"They won't come in, Sterling," I said quietly, leaning against the back of the empty CEO chair. "Federal marshals are currently stationed in the lobby with a warrant to inspect these exact financial ledgers. You have exactly ten seconds to sit down or join your audit in federal court."

Sterling stood frozen, his chest heaving under his silver vest. The board members looked away, unwilling to tie their fortunes to a failing coup. With a bitter, venomous hiss, Sterling snatched his briefcase, spun on his heel, and stormed out of the boardroom, leaving the stolen ledgers scattered across the mahogany table.
