Chapter 11 - The Emergency Override

The hospital corridor outside Room 402 fell into an unnatural, heavy silence just past midnight. I had just finished logging the corporate asset transfers onto the bedside monitor when the overhead emergency lights flickered once and died, plunging the hallway into a dim, amber battery glow.
"Willa, step away from the window," Everett said instantly, his voice dropping into a sharp, commanding tone as he tossed the blankets aside and swung his legs over the edge of the mattress.
Before I could answer, the electronic keypad on our door let out a harsh, high-pitched error tone. The automated lock mechanism jammed, sealed shut from the central nursing station. Outside the frosted glass panel, three heavy silhouettes appeared, standing motionless in the corridor. Private security operatives hired by Sterling, bypassing hospital protocol.
"He's cutting our communication lines," I said, tapping the screen of my tablet. The signal indicator dropped to zero. "The Wi-Fi and cellular repeaters are dead."
Everett didn't panic. He reached down to the heavy steel base of the IV pole, unscrewed a concealed compartment near the floor, and pulled out a ruggedized tactical satellite phone. He punched in a six-digit override code with practiced calm.
"This is Everett Kane," he spoke into the receiver, his voice cold and authoritative. "Activate Protocol Zero-Nine across the fourth-floor wing. Secure all access points and clear unauthorized personnel immediately."
Within seconds, the heavy silence outside was broken by the sharp, metallic echo of boots marching down the corridor. Shouts rang out as federal marshals, stationed discreetly downstairs by the corporate legal team, moved in to intercept Sterling's guards. We heard the scuffle of boots against linoleum, a sharp command to drop weapons, and the heavy thud of men being forced against the corridor wall.
The door keypad flashed green, and the lock clicked open.

A senior federal marshal pushed the door wide, nodding respectfully toward Everett. "Floor is secure, Mr. Kane. Sterling's men have been detained and escorted off the premises."
Everett lowered the satellite phone, his dark eyes fixing on the open doorway. He stood up fully from the bed, his posture rigid and commanding. The recovery was complete; the trap was closed.
