Chapter 13 - Return to the Chapel

Two days after Sterling’s arrest, the heavy oak doors of the bright, elegant church chapel swung open to reveal brilliant natural daylight streaming through the tall arched windows. The white floral arrangements from the wedding day still adorned the altar, their petals fresh and fragrant in the afternoon breeze. The morning air carried a crisp, refreshing coolness that contrasted sharply with the stifling anxiety of our initial encounter.

There were no hostile guests in the pews, no sneering relatives, and no forced coercion lingering in the shadows of the vaulted ceiling. The silence of the sanctuary was peaceful rather than oppressive, filled only with the soft hum of dust motes dancing in the sunbeams.

I stood near the shiny white aisle wearing a simple, elegant navy dress, my hair pinned back neatly, the smudged makeup and tattered earth-toned dress of that terrifying morning nothing more than a distant nightmare. Everett stood beside me, wearing a sharp black tuxedo with a white boutonnière on his lapel, his posture relaxed and completely recovered from the ordeal that nearly cost him everything. The small scar on his forehead caught the natural light, a quiet testament to the battles we had survived together.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He opened it slowly, revealing the plain gold wedding band that had been held between my trembling hands just days ago during the lowest point of my life.

"When they brought you to that altar, they tried to humiliate us both," Everett said softly, his dark eyes filled with a deep, unreserved warmth as he took my left hand in his. "They thought a forced marriage would destroy me and strip away my standing. Instead, it brought me the only person who ever truly saw me for who I am."

"You didn't have a choice then, Everett," I whispered, a gentle smile touching my lips as I squeezed his warm fingers. "It was all engineered to trap you."

"I have a choice now," he said, sliding the plain gold band slowly onto my finger, fitting it perfectly in place. "And every single day for the rest of my life, my choice is you, Willa."

I looked up into his eyes, the memory of the cold chapel floor fading away completely, replaced by the genuine promise of a real future. I raised my hand, tracing the small scar on his forehead before leaning in to press my lips softly against his in a quiet, enduring seal.

We turned away from the altar, walking side by side down the shiny white aisle and stepping out into the bright American daylight, hand in hand, ready for everything that came next.
