Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LOCKED DOORSan Gabriel Residence stood behind tall iron gates in the northern mountains.

It was an expensive private institution surrounded by pine forests and carefully maintained gardens.

From the outside, it looked peaceful.

Inside, according to Dr. Rivas, people had disappeared from public life for decades.

Elena arrived with Rafael, Nicolás, and attorney Clara Vega, a specialist in inheritance and human rights law.

Clara was forty-two, precise, intelligent, and unimpressed by royal titles.

Before entering, she turned toward Elena.

“Understand something. We are not here to rescue a king for political purposes.”

Elena nodded.

“We're here to find out whether a man has been unlawfully detained.”

“Exactly.”

Clara held up a court order authorizing access to records and a welfare assessment of the patient registered under the name Alejandro Serrano.

The institution's director, Dr. Mauricio Beltrán, greeted them with a strained smile.

“I'm afraid there must be a misunderstanding.”

Clara handed him the order.

“Then you can explain it to the court.”

Beltrán read the document.

His expression changed.

“This patient is elderly and medically fragile.”

“Then we'll proceed carefully.”

He hesitated.

Finally, he led them through a long corridor.

The building smelled of disinfectant and polished wood.

Elena's footsteps echoed against the floor.

At the end of the hallway stood a locked door.

Beltrán inserted a key.

Inside was a small room with a window overlooking the mountains.

An elderly man sat in a wheelchair beside the glass.

His hair was white.

His shoulders were narrow.

But his face was unmistakable.

King Alejandro Valcárcel.

Elena stopped breathing.

The man in the portraits.

The man declared dead seventeen years earlier.

The man her mother had tried to protect.

He was alive.

Rafael stepped forward.

“Alejandro?”

The old man turned slowly.

For a moment, there was no recognition.

Then his eyes widened.

“Rafael?”

Rafael covered his mouth.

“My God.”

Alejandro tried to stand.

His legs trembled.

Rafael hurried to him.

The two men embraced.

Neither spoke for several moments.

Elena watched through tears.

Then Alejandro looked over Rafael's shoulder.

His expression changed.

“Isabella?”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

She approached.

“I'm Elena.”

The old king stared at her.

“Elena?”

She nodded.

“Isabella's daughter.”

His eyes filled with tears.

He reached for her hand.

“You look just like her.”

Elena knelt beside him.

“I've waited my whole life to know the truth about my mother.”

Alejandro's face crumpled.

“I tried to save her.”

“I know.”

“I should have done more.”

Elena held his hand.

“You didn't deserve what happened to you.”

He looked at Rafael.

“Beatriz?”

Rafael nodded.

“She's still at the palace.”

Alejandro closed his eyes.

“Then she's still lying.”

Clara stepped forward.

“Your Majesty, we need to ask you some questions about your confinement.”

Alejandro gave a bitter smile.

“Your Majesty.”

He looked around the small room.

“I haven't heard anyone call me that in seventeen years.”

Over the next hour, he described how he had been sedated after confronting Beatriz about the missing charitable funds.

He remembered waking in a private medical facility.

He remembered being told that the outside world believed he was dead.

He remembered years of restricted communication and medication that left him confused and exhausted.

Clara recorded his testimony with his consent.

Then she asked:

“Do you know why Adrián was adopted?”

Alejandro looked toward Elena.

“Yes.”

“Was he Lucía Aranda's son?”

“Yes.”

“Who was his biological father?”

Alejandro hesitated.

Then he looked toward Nicolás.

The younger prince had been standing quietly near the window.

His expression was tense.

Alejandro whispered:

“Victor Aranda.”

Nicolás frowned.

“Victor?”

Alejandro shook his head.

“No. Victor wasn't Adrián's father.”

Elena leaned closer.

“Then who was?”

Alejandro looked down.

“Lucía had a relationship with a man who was already married. When she became pregnant, Victor arranged for the baby to be adopted into the royal family.”

“Why?” Clara asked.

Alejandro's voice grew faint.

“Because Victor needed someone inside the succession who would eventually answer to him.”

Rafael looked troubled.

“Who was the father?”

Alejandro took a long breath.

Then he spoke a name none of them expected.

“Gabriel Montoya.”

Elena froze.

Gabriel Montoya.

Rafael's younger brother.

The uncle who had disappeared from their lives before she was born.

Alejandro looked directly at her.

“Adrián is your cousin, Elena.”
