Chapter 11 - THE HOUSE WHERE NO ONE WAS ALLOWED TO LEAVEGabriel Montoya's estate stood deep in the countryside, surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills.

For more than twenty years, Rafael had believed his younger brother was living abroad.

They had not spoken since a bitter argument following Isabella's death.

Rafael had blamed Gabriel for abandoning the family when they needed him most.

Now he wondered whether that abandonment had been another carefully constructed lie.

Elena sat beside him as their car approached the estate.

“Do you think Uncle Gabriel is alive?”

Rafael looked toward the distant house.

“I don't know.”

Clara had secured an emergency judicial order permitting a welfare check based on evidence of possible unlawful confinement.

Two investigators accompanied them.

At the entrance, an elderly caretaker appeared.

When he saw Rafael, his face went pale.

“Mr. Montoya?”

“Where is my brother?”

The caretaker looked toward the house.

“Sir, I—”

“Where is Gabriel?”

A voice answered from the doorway.

“Right here.”

A tall man stepped into the sunlight.

His hair was gray.

His face was thinner than Rafael remembered.

But there was no mistaking him.

Gabriel Montoya.

Rafael stopped.

For a moment, the brothers simply stared at each other.

Then Rafael spoke.

“You're alive.”

Gabriel gave a sad smile.

“I've been alive this whole time.”

“Why didn't you contact me?”

Gabriel looked toward the investigators.

“Because Victor made sure I understood what would happen if I did.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Uncle Gabriel?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Elena.”

He approached slowly.

“You look so much like Isabella.”

She embraced him.

For a moment, Gabriel held her tightly.

Then he stepped back.

“I owe you both an explanation.”

Inside the house, Gabriel described years of blackmail.

Victor had threatened to expose the circumstances surrounding Adrián's adoption and accuse Gabriel of financial misconduct.

He had used forged documents to keep Gabriel isolated and dependent.

“Why didn't you go to the police?” Rafael asked.

Gabriel lowered his eyes.

“Because I was afraid.”

Rafael looked at him.

“Of Victor?”

“Of losing my son.”

Elena felt her breath catch.

“Adrián?”

Gabriel nodded.

“Yes.”

He sat heavily in a chair.

“Lucía and I were young. We loved each other. But Victor believed our relationship would damage his political ambitions.”

“What happened?” Elena asked.

“When Lucía became pregnant, Victor convinced her that the child would be safer inside the royal family.”

Rafael frowned.

“Why would Alejandro agree?”

“Because Beatriz wanted an heir and couldn't have another biological child.”

Elena looked toward the window.

“So Adrián was raised as a prince because Victor wanted influence over the throne?”

Gabriel nodded.

“And because Beatriz wanted to protect the image of the monarchy.”

“Where is Lucía?”

Gabriel's face changed.

“Upstairs.”

Elena stood immediately.

“Is she all right?”

Gabriel hesitated.

“She hasn't been well.”

They climbed a narrow staircase.

At the end of the hallway, Gabriel opened a bedroom door.

A woman sat beside the window.

Her dark hair was streaked with silver.

Her hands rested on a blanket.

She looked up.

“Gabriel?”

He approached.

“Lucía, someone has come to see you.”

The woman turned toward Elena.

For a moment, she simply stared.

Then she whispered:

“Isabella?”

Elena knelt beside her.

“No. I'm Elena.”

Lucía's eyes filled with tears.

“Her daughter.”

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

Lucía reached for her hand.

“Your mother tried to save my baby.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

Lucía began crying.

“Victor wanted to use Adrián. Isabella found out. She begged Alejandro to protect him.”

Rafael stepped closer.

“Lucía, did Victor arrange Isabella's accident?”

The woman closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Gabriel covered his face.

Lucía continued.

“But Beatriz didn't know everything.”

Elena leaned forward.

“What didn't she know?”

Lucía's voice trembled.

“Victor had another plan.”

She gripped Elena's hand.

“He didn't just want Adrián to inherit the throne.”

“What did he want?”

Lucía looked toward the door.

“He wanted to make sure that when Adrián became king, every royal asset would belong to Victor.”

Elena felt cold.

“How?”

Lucía whispered:

“By making Adrián sign a document he never understood.”

Then she revealed the name of that document.

The Crown Surrender Agreement.
