Chapter 2 - THE DAUGHTER WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST“Tell me she's lying.”

Elena's voice trembled as she stared at Rafael.
“Dad, please. Tell me that woman is lying.”
Rafael stood motionless.
Behind him, the palace windows glowed with warm golden light, as though nothing extraordinary had happened.
Inside those walls, servants were preparing dinner.
Flowers stood in crystal vases.
The royal family's portraits watched over corridors that had witnessed generations of secrets.
And outside, Elena's entire understanding of her life was falling apart.
Rafael slowly lowered the photograph.
“Elena, there are things I should have told you years ago.”
She stepped backward.
“No.”
“Sweetheart—”
“No. Don't call me that until you answer me.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Was King Alejandro my father?”
Adrián's expression twisted.
“That's impossible.”
Beatriz turned sharply toward her son.
“Adrián, be quiet.”
But Elena barely heard them.
She was watching Rafael.
The man who had taught her to ride a bicycle.
The man who had stayed awake beside her hospital bed when she had pneumonia.
The man who had attended every school performance, every graduation, every important moment of her life.
He had never once made her feel anything less than his daughter.
Now she wondered how much of that life had been built around a secret.
Rafael took a slow breath.
“King Alejandro was connected to your birth. But not in the way Beatriz wants you to believe.”
Beatriz's face hardened.
“Careful, Rafael.”
He turned toward her.
“You've threatened me for seventeen years. That ends tonight.”
Then he looked back at Elena.
“Your mother was King Alejandro's younger half sister.”
Elena stared at him.
“What?”
Adrián stopped breathing for a moment.
Beatriz closed her eyes.
Rafael continued.
“Isabella was born before the previous king married Alejandro's mother. Her existence was concealed because acknowledging her would have created a constitutional crisis over the succession.”
Elena's lips parted.
“My mother was royal?”
“Yes.”
“And King Alejandro was my uncle?”
“Yes.”
Adrián looked toward his mother.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Beatriz's expression became cold.
“Because some truths are more dangerous than lies.”
Elena felt a wave of nausea.
She had married Adrián without knowing they shared a royal ancestor.
Rafael quickly understood what frightened her.
“Elena, listen to me. Adrián was adopted into the Valcárcel family as an infant. He has no biological connection to Isabella.”
Adrián recoiled.
“Adopted?”
The word echoed across the courtyard.
Nicolás stepped forward.
“Mother?”
Beatriz gripped the stone railing.
Rafael's voice grew heavier.
“Yes, Adrián. You were adopted through a private arrangement. King Alejandro loved you as his son, but the official records concealed the adoption.”
Adrián shook his head violently.
“You're lying.”
Rafael opened another folder.
“Your birth certificate was amended when you were six months old.”
Adrián stared at the document.
The date matched his birthday.
The hospital matched the one where he had supposedly been born.
But the names of his biological parents had been sealed.
He turned toward Beatriz.
“Tell me he's wrong.”
Beatriz said nothing.
“Mother!”
She looked at him.
“I did what was necessary to protect you.”
Adrián stumbled backward.
For the first time in his life, he looked less like a prince than a frightened little boy.
Elena should have felt satisfaction.
Instead, she felt an unexpected sadness.
A terrible secret had been used to shape all their lives.
But it did not excuse what Adrián had done to her.
She touched her cheek.
The pain reminded her why she was standing outside in the cold.
“Dad,” she said quietly, “I want to leave.”
Rafael nodded immediately.
“Of course.”
Adrián suddenly moved toward her.
“Elena, wait.”
She turned.
His face was pale.
“We need to talk.”
“No.”
“You can't just walk away.”
“I can.”
He lowered his voice.
“You're still my wife.”
Elena met his eyes.
“And you were supposed to be my husband.”
The words struck harder than any accusation.
For a moment, Adrián looked ashamed.
Then his pride returned.
“You think your father can take everything from me?”
Elena looked toward the palace.
“I don't know what he can take.”
She picked up her suitcase.
“But I know what you already lost.”
Rafael opened the car door.
Before Elena entered, Beatriz spoke.
“You think you've won, Rafael?”
He turned.
The queen mother descended the palace steps.
“You have the documents. You have the trust. But you don't have the one thing you need to make any of it enforceable.”
Rafael's expression tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
Beatriz smiled.
“The original royal acknowledgment.”
Rafael went still.
Beatriz leaned closer.
“Without it, Isabella's claim can be challenged. And you know perfectly well where that document is.”
Rafael's jaw tightened.
Elena looked between them.
“What acknowledgment?”
Beatriz's smile widened.
“The document your mother died trying to retrieve.”
May you like
Then she delivered the words Rafael had dreaded for seventeen years.
“And if you want it, Elena, you'll have to ask the man who was driving the car the night Isabella disappeared.”
