Chapter 8: Hiding Behind Linen Stacks

We pressed ourselves flat against the damp stone wall, hidden entirely within the deep shadow cast by the towering linen stacks. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, but I kept my gaze fixed on the sliver of space between two canvas-covered crates. The rhythmic footsteps grew louder, crunching sharply over the gravelly floor of the sub-basement until they stopped just a few paces from our hiding place.

A low murmur of voices broke the subterranean silence.

"I tell you, the boy is getting suspicious," a sharp, unfamiliar voice said—a harsh, reedy tone that certainly didn't belong to any member of the estate staff. "He found the signet ring in the nursery this morning. We can't afford a prolonged investigation before the title transfer is finalized next month."

Victor’s smooth, measured voice replied, cutting through the damp air with chilling composure. "Let him look. He has no proof, no allies, and no way off the grounds tonight. Once the county registrar signs off on the emergency guardianship papers tomorrow morning, Julian and the girl will be legally transferred to a private sanitarium upstate for 'exhaustion.' The estate reverts to the board of trustees, and our arrangement proceeds as planned."

The unfamiliar man grunted, the sound wet and dissatisfied. "And the maid?"

"Clara is easily managed," Victor said coldly. "A simple matter of reducing her wages until she leaves voluntarily, or letting her share their unfortunate fate. The palace swallows a lot of secrets, old friend. It has for a century."

My blood ran cold. The threat wasn't just about financial theft or a hidden ledger; it was an outright conspiracy to commit institutional kidnapping under the guise of legal guardianship. They intended to erase us entirely, locking us away in a sterile medical facility while they carved up my family's legacy. Beside me, Jura looked up, her dark eyes shining with silent comprehension in the dim light. She didn't make a sound, merely squeezing my fingers tightly.

A moment later, the footsteps turned away, echoing back toward the upper stairs. The heavy door slammed shut with a dull, distant thud, sealing off the beam of light and plunging us back into near-total darkness.

"Mr. Julian," Clara whispered, her voice trembling with barely suppressed rage. "We cannot wait until morning. They're going to have us committed."

"I know," I said, my jaw set as I pulled Jura close. "We need to find that service tunnel right now. Before they realize the gates aren't our only way out."
