Chapter 14: Testimony at the County Courthouse

The air inside the county courtroom smelled of old paper, polished mahogany, and the crisp autumn wind blowing through the tall Victorian windows. Seated at the wooden plaintiff's table, I adjusted my collar while watching the judge review the final stack of photographic evidence spread across the bench.

The gallery behind us was packed with curious townspeople and local reporters, but my focus remained entirely on the witness stand. Clara sat upright, her hands folded neatly in her lap, her black maid's dress immaculate. She had just finished delivering a meticulous, chronological account of Victor's unauthorized nocturnal rounds, detailing the exact weeks he had used his secondary master keys to rifle through my father's private office and inspect our living quarters.

"And you personally observed the defendant entering the child's private drawing room after midnight on multiple occasions?" the presiding magistrate asked, peering over his spectacles at Clara.

"Yes, Your Honor," Clara answered clearly, her voice echoing in the quiet courtroom. "He claimed it was routine security maintenance, but no member of the domestic staff was ever permitted to carry those specific brass keys. Only Mr. Victor had them."

The prosecuting attorney stepped forward, holding up a transparent evidence bag containing a polished black shoe with a distinctive stacked heel. "We submit into evidence, Your Honor, the matching footwear recovered from the defendant's private quarters this morning, which corresponds precisely to the plaster casts taken from the hallway outside the nursery, as well as the eyewitness testimony of young Jura regarding the nocturnal visits."

Across the aisle, Victor sat at the defense table between two state-appointed attorneys. His once-impeccable suit now looked dusty and ill-fitting, his posture slumped as the overwhelming weight of physical evidence dismantled his final legal defenses. He didn't look at me; his eyes were fixed on the polished wood of the defense table, his fingers twitching nervously against his knees. The myth of his untouchable administrative authority had dissolved entirely under the cold light of judicial accountability.

The magistrate cleared his throat, gathering the papers into a neat pile before delivering his verdict. The charges of unlawful trespass, financial fraud, and systematic harassment were sustained across every count. As the bailiffs stood behind Victor and placed the heavy steel cuffs around his wrists, a quiet sigh of relief seemed to exhale from the entire courtroom. The ghosts that had haunted our corridors weren't supernatural phantoms born of a child's overactive imagination; they were the very real, very human shadows of greed and control. And now, at long last, those shadows were being swept away into the light.
