Chapter 11: The Midday Tea and the Hidden Note

The crystal chandelier in the drawing room caught the bright midday light, throwing fractured rainbows across the polished marble floor. Victor had spared no expense in arranging this impromptu gathering, inviting half a dozen local dignitaries, municipal board members, and prominent civic leaders to tea. It was a calculated display of absolute normalcy, a theatrical performance designed to prove to the entire county that the estate was serene, well-managed, and entirely under his capable stewardship.
I stood near the tall arched windows, clutching a delicate porcelain teacup while my eyes scanned the room. Clara moved quietly among the guests in her crisp black dress and white lace apron, offering silver trays of pastries with practiced grace. Across the room, Jura sat demurely on a velvet settee next to a visiting magistrate's wife, wearing her favorite pink ruffled dress and matching pink hair bows. Her small hands rested innocently in her lap, but her gaze was sharp, darting toward Victor every time he raised his voice in polished administrative anecdotes.
Victor held court near the fireplace, his sharp black suit immaculate, his silver-buckled shoes gleaming under the afternoon sun. He laughed smoothly at a joke made by the town mayor, gesturing with an expensive fountain pen. "The estate," Victor announced to the appreciative nods of the assembled guests, "has always operated with absolute transparency and rigorous oversight. Our young charge, Julian, is merely adjusting to the heavy responsibilities of his inheritance. Family grief sometimes manifests as unwarranted paranoia."
A murmur of sympathetic agreement rippled through the gathered elite. They nodded knowingly, sipping their Earl Grey tea, entirely seduced by Victor's veneer of institutional authority. I felt a hot flash of anger rise in my chest, but I forced my breathing to remain slow and measured. I knew the truth of what lived behind those polite smiles and polished facades. I took a slow step backward, keeping my gaze fixed on Victor as he continued his speech.

Jura caught my eye from across the room. With a quick, practiced motion that betrayed how carefully we had rehearsed this moment, she slipped her hand into the folds of her skirt. She extracted a folded slip of heavy parchment—a handwritten note detailing the missing estate ledgers and the unauthorized midnight entries into our private quarters. As Victor turned his back to pour another cup of tea, Jura slid off the velvet settee and drifted gracefully toward the magistrate's chair, her small patent-leather shoes clicking softly against the marble.
With an innocent smile, Jura handed the magistrate a small sugar cube on a porcelain spoon, and beneath it, tucked the folded note directly into the open leather portfolio resting on his knee. The magistrate blinked down at her, chuckling softly as he patted her dark curly hair, completely unaware that he had just received the key to unlocking Victor's entire financial conspiracy.
