Chapter 4

The late-night bus rattled violently as it bounced over the deep potholes of the outer district, the greasy window reflecting the pale, exhausted hollows beneath my eyes. I sat near the back on a torn vinyl seat, the damp chill of the autumn night still clinging to my shoulders beneath my worn canvas jacket. The heavy silence of the vehicle was broken only by the rhythmic squeak of the worn suspension and the low, throbbing hum of the diesel engine, giving me the fragile space I needed to pull the folded cocktail napkin from my pocket and examine the jagged ink strokes under the dim amber glow of the ceiling light.
Alex Vance. The signature was bold, arrogant, and just legible enough to make a bank manager raise an eyebrow, but the paper itself was nothing more than cheap linen meant to be discarded with the empty champagne flutes. I pulled out my phone, the screen illuminating my tired face with a harsh, blue glare as I tapped open the mobile banking app and checked the balance of my checking account. Three dollars and forty-two cents. It was a cruel, mocking joke compared to the towering stack of past-due medical notices waiting for me on the laminate kitchen table of my rented room.
My phone vibrated violently in my palm, snapping me back to the immediate crisis as it flashed a bright red push notification from the Memorial Health Clinic: Final Notice – Immediate Balance Required to Prevent Service Suspension. The timestamp read 11:58 PM, glowing like a tiny countdown timer of our remaining dignity. My mother's critical dialysis treatment was scheduled for tomorrow morning at exactly eight o'clock, and without the fifty thousand dollars Alex had so casually wagered on a whim in that golden ballroom, the clinic doors would remain firmly locked against us. I stared out the smeared bus window at the towering glass silhouettes of the downtown financial district gleaming coldly in the distance, a hard determination settling deep into my bones. The billionaire thought he was playing a harmless game he could walk away from at dawn with a laugh, but I was going to be standing at his corporate doors the exact moment they unlocked to collect every single penny he promised.
