Chapter 1

The golden light of the grand ballroom chandeliers shimmered against the polished mahogany floor, casting long, warm reflections across the crowded room. In my left hand, the silver tray felt heavy, laden with delicate champagne glasses that chimed softly with every nervous breath I took. Just a few feet away, Alex stood with his hand possessively resting on Victoria’s bare shoulder, his tuxedo immaculate and his smile dripping with lazy contempt. He pointed a finger straight toward my chest as the murmurs of the elite guests died down into a sharp, expectant silence, the orchestra fading to a low, rhythmic thrum that matched the rapid beating of my heart.

If you can really dance, I'll dump her and marry you tonight.

My name is Elena, and I was holding a tray of borrowed champagne while wearing a faded grey maid uniform that smelled faintly of industrial detergent, my second job of the day weighing heavily on my aching feet.

The exact time was 11:42 PM, mere minutes before my shift was scheduled to end and my rent-controlled apartment key slipped further out of reach. I looked down at the rim of my white apron, my fingers tightening around the silver rim of the tray until my knuckles turned white, feeling the cool condensation from the crystal flutes seep through my cotton gloves. Across from me, Victoria tossed her head back in a tinkling, effortless laugh, pressing her hand against Alex's lapel as the sequins on her silver evening dress caught the overhead glare, completely confident in her untouchable social standing.

You're terrible, Alex.

What? Too scared? I'll give you $50,000 if you take the challenge.

The words hung in the warm air, heavy with the casual cruelty of a billionaire treating a human being as a parlor trick for his own amusement. The surrounding guests chuckled behind champagne flutes, waiting for me to bow my head, shuffle backward into the pantry, and accept my place at the bottom of the room. Instead, I lifted my chin, the soft facial lighting catching the steady pulse at my throat as I looked directly into his arrogant, amused eyes, measuring the exact depth of his reckless wager against the mountain of bills waiting for me at home.

I accept.
