Chapter 2

The collective intake of breath around the ballroom sounded like a sudden draft sweeping through a hollow corridor. Alex’s hand remained heavy and possessive on my shoulder, his fingers digging slightly into the coarse fabric of my grey maid uniform as if waiting for me to laugh nervously, drop the tray, and scurry back to the service kitchens. Victoria turned her head, her silver sequined dress catching the warm golden chandelier light as she smirked at the absurd spectacle of a catering employee stepping out of line. But the cold panic that usually paralyzed me when facing the wealthy patrons dissolved, replaced by the rigid, familiar discipline I had spent ten years carving into my muscles behind closed studio doors.
I set the silver tray down carefully upon an unattended mahogany side table, letting the crystal glasses settle without a single sharp chime. The music swelled, a live string quartet pivoting mid-measure into a driving, syncopated rhythm that demanded a partner who understood weight transfer and frame. Alex blinked, his arrogant smile twitching at the corners as I stepped past his barrier and assumed the traditional closed position, my right hand resting firmly against his tuxedo lapel while my left caught his palm with an unyielding, professional grip.
You're terrible, Alex.
May you like
Victoria's remark cut through the quiet murmur of the crowd, but Alex didn't answer her; his eyes locked onto mine, suddenly stripped of their lazy amusement as he felt the precise tension of my frame. I didn't wait for him to lead the first step. Instead, I initiated a sharp, downward pressure through our connection, forcing his weight onto his heels and sweeping my foot into a rapid, blistering natural turn that carried us a full rotation across the polished parquet before he could catch his balance.
The shock rippled visibly across his face, his jaw tightening as he scrambled to match my rhythm, realizing too late that he was no longer holding a timid spectator. Around us, the circle of wealthy onlookers parted, cameras flashing silently in the golden gloom as we spun through the center of the room. Every drop step and cross-body lead I executed was crisp, disciplined, and utterly devoid of the amateur hesitation he had expected to humiliate. By the final heavy chord of the waltz, I stood firm and unbreathing inches from his chest, my gaze steady as he broke out in a thin sheen of sweat under the collar of his bow tie. A low, stunned murmur broke out among the guests, and without a word, Alex reached into his breast pocket, grabbed a heavy fountain pen, and ripped a linen napkin from the nearest table, slashing his signature across the cloth before shoving it into my hand.
