Chapter 15 - Where the Pavement Ends

The sun had finally cleared the tree line, casting a warm golden light over the paved driveway where this entire ordeal had begun less than seventy-two hours ago. The black SUV sat parked precisely where it had been during the ambush, though the shattered glass from the initial gunfire had long since been swept away by the estate crew.

Federal vehicles and unmarked cruisers were beginning to clear out, their tires crunching softly over the gravel drive as the morning quiet settled back over Isabetta’s estate. My small canvas bag sat on the hood of the SUV, packed with the few meager belongings I had brought with me when I first fled the clinic. It felt like a lifetime ago, a different version of myself entirely—one who ran out of fear rather than standing her ground.

I zipped my jacket against the cool morning breeze, my hand resting on the smooth leather of the duffel. The chest wound still throbbed with a dull, persistent ache whenever I breathed too deeply, a permanent reminder of the price of the truth. Yet, standing here on the polished stone, looking out toward the open county highway beyond the wrought-iron gates, the crushing weight of isolation had vanished.

Footsteps echoed softly on the pavement behind me. I didn't need to turn around to know it was Rafael. He stopped just a shoulder-width away, the scent of cedar and rain clinging to his dark shirt, his wristwatch catching the morning sunlight as he crossed his arms.

"You're packed," he observed, his tone dangerously neutral, though his gaze searched my face for any sign of hesitation.

"I have to go back to the city eventually," I said, turning to face him fully. "My apartment is still there. My job at the clinic, or whatever is left of it under new receivership..." I trailed off, looking down at the pavement between us.

"You don't have to go anywhere," Rafael said, stepping closer until the space between us narrowed to a breath. His voice dropped to that deep, intense register that bypassed all my defenses. "Isabetta’s legal team has cleared your name, and the federal protection detail is permanent if you want it. But you don't have to face any of it alone anymore."

"Is that an order?" I asked softly, a faint, wry smile touching the corners of my mouth as I echoed the words from the driveway on our first night.

A slow, genuine smile broke through his guarded expression, softening the sharp lines of his jaw. He reached out, his warm fingers gently catching my chin and tilting my face upward so I had no choice but to look straight into his eyes.

"Yes," Rafael murmured, his thumb brushing lightly across my cheekbone. "Look at me. Stay here. With us."

I looked into his dark, unwavering eyes, feeling the last of my defensive walls crumble away entirely. I reached up, my hand resting flat against his chest right over the steady, powerful beat of his heart.

"Okay," I whispered. "I'm staying."

He pulled me against him, careful of the bandages beneath my shirt, holding me close as the morning sun warmed the stone driveway. We stood there together, anchored to the place where everything had broken and everything had begun, ready to face whatever came next.
