Chapter 13 - Footsteps on Marble

The sound of footsteps on the grand marble staircase echoed sharply through the darkened estate. Each footfall was deliberate, heavy with the confidence of men who believed the building belonged to them.

Rafael pressed his back against the mahogany bookshelves just inside the library entrance, his eyes fixed on the sliver of moonlight cutting across the Persian rug from the uncurtained bay window. He turned his head slightly, his dark gaze checking on me where I crouched behind the heavy oak desk. The cold steel of the service pistol felt heavy and familiar in my palm, my thumb resting naturally against the safety catch as I regulated my breathing.

"They're coming down the east gallery," I whispered, the words barely carrying over the hum of the cooling laptop screen on the desk. "Two, maybe three of them. Moving slow. Checking the doors."

"Let them check," Rafael murmured back, his voice low and steady. He shifted his grip on his weapon, the moonlight catching the dark ink on his forearm. "Vance isn't far behind them. He wants that laptop wiped before federal units can ping the IP address."

A shadow crossed the open library doorway, blotting out the sliver of moonlight. A gloved hand gripped the doorframe, followed by the low murmur of a muffled voice speaking into a comms unit.

"Clear the lower hall. The server room's dead," a harsh voice muttered from the corridor. "Check the library study. If she's still breathing, finish it."

Rafael didn't wait for them to step fully across the threshold. In a single, fluid motion, he pivoted around the doorframe, his left hand gripping the intruder's collar while his right drove the barrel of his pistol hard against the man's chest. The man gasped, his radio clattering against the marble floor before Rafael swept his legs out from under him, dropping him silently to the rug with a muffled thud.

I rose from behind the desk, keeping my weapon raised as a second figure rushed through the doorway, leveling a silenced automatic toward Rafael's back.

"Rafael—drop!" I shouted, stepping clear of the desk.

My index finger squeezed the trigger just as the man's arm jerked upward. The gunshot cracked through the cavernous library, shattering a crystal decanter on the sideboard and sending amber shards spraying across the floor. The impact spun the intruder sideways, his shoulder slamming into the heavy walnut credenza before he slid down the wainscoting, dropping his weapon with a metallic clatter.

Silence descended instantly over the room, broken only by the ragged breathing of the downed men and the hum of the computer.

Rafael stepped over the first intruder, his eyes scanning the hallway beyond the door before he looked back at me. A slow, intense heat burned in his gaze, fierce and unyielding. "You clear?"

"Clear," I breathed, my heart hammering against my ribs as my chest wound throbbed in protest. I lowered the barrel a fraction of an inch, keeping my stance balanced. "Where's Vance?"

"Right here," a calm, chilling voice replied from the doorway.

Dr. Vance stepped out of the shadows of the gallery, his tailored suit immaculate, his hands empty and raised in mock surrender. A thin smile touched his lips as he looked past Rafael at the laptop resting on the desk. "It's over, children. You uploaded corrupted metadata. The real records were purged an hour ago."

May you like

Rafael lunged forward before Vance could finish the sentence, grabbing the chief of staff by the lapels and slamming him hard against the oak doorframe. "You're done, Vance. The federal servers have everything."

Heavy boots thudded against the marble foyer outside, accompanied by the distinct sound of estate security backup flooding the main corridor.
