Chapter 1 - The Pavement Burns

The gravel and packed dirt of the driveway gave way to smooth, sun-baked asphalt under the tires of the black SUV, but the stop was violent. My hands shook so hard against the steering wheel that the plastic horn clicked twice before I managed to throw the gearshift into park. Every breath felt like inhaling crushed glass, a sharp, white-hot tearing sensation radiating from the left side of my chest. I scrambled backward across the front seat, my boots tangling in the floor mats, and stumbled out through the driver’s side door into the blinding late afternoon glare.
"This is control," I gasped, my voice barely carrying past my own ears as I stared past the glinting hood at the stone facade of the mansion.
Isabetta stood near the wide double doors, her silver hair coiled in a tight updo that defied the chaos of the afternoon. Her black blazer caught the golden hour light, casting long shadows across the paving stones. She didn’t flinch, but her hands gripped the fabric of her skirt with white-knuckled rigidity. Behind her, the heavy oak doors remained shut, a barricade against whatever jagged reality we had just fled down the county highway.
Footsteps crunched heavily on the gravel behind me. Rafael didn't shout. He moved with a terrifying, coiled speed, his dark sleeves rolled to the elbows to reveal the intricate ink winding down his forearms. Before my knees could fully buckle beneath the weight of the expanding dark stain spreading across my white scrub shirt, his arms were there. He caught me cleanly, his solid chest absorbing my collapse as we hit the pavement together. He cradled my head against his shoulder, his breath warm and frantic against my ear.
"Run. Look at me. Your mother," Rafael ordered, his voice rough and low, vibrating through his entire frame as he checked the wound with fingers that moved with practiced, clinical precision.
The heat of the asphalt pressed against my back, but I couldn't feel the ground anymore. My vision narrowed to the sharp planes of his face, the dark stubble along his jaw, and the steady, frantic rise and fall of his chest.
"I'm here because of you," I managed, my fingers clawing weakly at the dark fabric of his sleeve, leaving smears of bright, metallic red.

"Stay with me," he commanded, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that burned away the edges of the fading light.
Isabetta hurried forward now, her leather heels clicking sharply on the stone. She knelt beside us, her cool fingers pressing firmly against my right shoulder, anchoring me to the driveway as the world tilted sideways. Rafael didn't hesitate; his gaze flicked toward the rear tire of the SUV where a heavy canvas first aid kit sat half-unzipped on the gravel. He reached out blindly without breaking his hold on me, his fingers searching for the canvas straps.
