Chapter 9 - Whispers in the Lobby

Two days dragged by in a haze of forced confinement and restless pacing. The penthouse began to feel less like a sanctuary and more like a gilded prison cell as the walls seemed to close in around me. By the third afternoon, the silence became unbearable. I needed to walk, to feel real air against my skin that hadn't been filtered through a centralized climate control system. Marta met my request with a tight-lipped sigh, making a quick phone call before stepping aside to let me take the private elevator down to the ground floor.

The lobby of the commercial building was a cavern of polished limestone, brushed steel, and soaring glass panels where executives in tailored suits drifted past like ghosts. I kept my head down, pulling the collar of my trench coat up against the chill of the afternoon air drifting through the revolving doors. I had almost reached the sidewalk when a familiar, jarring voice cut through the ambient murmur of the lobby.

"Khloe! Wait, damn it, stop walking away from me."

My blood ran cold. I froze on the polished stone floor, my fingers curling tightly into the fabric of my pockets. I turned slowly to see Liam pushing past the security desk, looking disheveled and frantic. His black button-down shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his suit jacket rumpled as if he had slept in it, and his eyes were bloodshot and wild. He spotted me and lunged forward, his face twisted in a desperate mixture of fury and pleading.

"You think you can hide behind some high-priced thug?" Liam hissed, stepping directly into my personal space, his breath smelling faintly of stale whiskey. "He doesn't care about you, Khloe. He owns half the city's underground, and you're just a new toy on his shelf. Come back with me. We can fix this—"

Before he could reach out to grab my wrist, the air around us seemed to shift. Two men in dark overcoats materialized on either side of Liam with supernatural quietness, their massive frames effectively cutting him off from me without a single aggressive gesture. A moment later, Victor stepped out from the private elevator alcove, his expression carved from absolute ice.

"Mr. Hayes," Victor said, his voice cutting through the lobby with a quiet, devastating authority that instantly drew the silent attention of every nearby employee. "It appears my previous message didn't penetrate the fog of your comprehension."

Liam's face drained of color as he looked from Victor to the two towering men flanking him, the false bravado instantly dissolving into naked terror.
