Chapter 4 - The Silver Leaf Lounge

The Silver Leaf Lounge smelled of stale bourbon, old leather, and floor polish long dried into the floorboards. At two in the afternoon, the place was virtually deserted, save for a bartender wiping down glasses near the far end of the mahogany counter. I pulled my coat tighter around my shoulders, my eyes scanning the dim interior until I spotted him.

Victor Russo sat alone in the rear corner booth, half-shrouded in the shadows beneath a brass wall sconce. He wore a crisp charcoal suit today, the jacket unbuttoned to reveal the same dark patterns of his chest tattoo creeping up his throat. He wasn't drinking; he was simply resting his hands flat against the dark wood table, watching the entrance with absolute, predatory stillness.

I walked over, my boots clicking softly against the linoleum, and slid into the vinyl booth opposite him. Up close, his presence was overwhelming—not because he radiated aggression like Liam, but because he radiated a terrifying, controlled power that felt entirely unshakeable.

"You made good time," Victor said, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made it difficult to look away.

"He was at my door," I said, skipping any polite preamble. My hands were balled into fists inside my coat pockets, nails digging into my palms to keep from shaking. "He found my apartment. He's not going to stop until he forces me back under his thumb."

Victor leaned back slightly, resting his arm along the back of the booth. He didn't look surprised; if anything, he looked mildly disappointed, as if he had already mapped out Liam's predictable trajectory.

"Liam Vance," Victor said, tasting the name on his tongue like something foul. "A minor player in real estate development with a major ego problem. He thinks his family name and a few flashy contracts make him untouchable in this city."

"He's dangerous," I insisted, leaning forward across the table. "You don't know what he's like behind closed doors. He breaks things. He breaks people."

"People only break if you let them apply the pressure, Miss Hayes," Victor said quietly, though his tone wasn't mocking. It was factual. "Last night, he crossed a line in a public space I happen to frequent. Today, he’s bothering someone who holds my card. That makes him my business."

"Why?" I asked the question that had been burning in my chest since the restaurant. "Why do you care? I'm a complete stranger to you."

Victor held my gaze for a long, silent moment. The hum of the ancient neon sign above the bar filled the space between us.

"I have an aversion to men who don't know how to keep their hands to themselves," Victor said softly, a ghost of a humorless smile touching the corner of his mouth. "And I have a habit of collecting obligations. If I offer you protection, Khloe, it comes with conditions. You follow my lead, you stay where I tell you to stay, and you let me handle Vance permanently."

I stared at him, weighing the terrifying magnitude of what he was proposing. Trading one cage for another? Or stepping out of the shadows entirely under the umbrella of a man who made monsters like Liam look like children playing with matches?

"What do you want me to do?" I asked.

Victor slid a small, encrypted burner phone across the table toward me. "Keep this with you at all times. Go back to your apartment tonight. If he's there, don't engage. Call this number. My men will handle the rest."

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out slowly. A new text message flashed on the screen from an unknown number.

*Your office lobby. Ten minutes. Don't make me come upstairs again.*

I slid the phone across the table so Victor could read it. He glanced down at the screen, his expression hardening into stone. The dark ink of his chest tattoo shifted as he took a slow, deliberate breath.

"Looks like your landlord is impatient," Victor said, standing up from the booth and adjusting his suit jacket. "Let's go see how much courage Mr. Vance has when he's not cornering women in empty hallways."
