Chapter 13 - The Price of Sanctuary

When Victor returned that evening, the penthouse was dark except for the amber glow of the city lights bleeding through the massive windows. I was sitting on the edge of the slate sofa, a glass of water untouched on the low table before me. I heard the private elevator chime, the soft click of the doors sliding open, and the quiet, measured tread of his footsteps on the stone floor.

He didn't turn on the overhead lights. He walked into the living area, shedding his suit jacket over the same chair as before, before noticing me sitting quietly in the shadows. He paused, his dark eyes adjusting to the dim room, and walked slowly toward the seating area, stopping a few feet away.

"I saw the security feed today," I said, my voice cutting through the silence before he could speak. I didn't look up at him; my gaze remained fixed on the condensation sliding down the side of my water glass. "Down at the loading dock. Your men handled Liam."

Victor let out a slow, measured breath, slipping his hands into the pockets of his black shirt. "He needed a reminder of the boundaries we discussed. Sometimes people have short memories when their pride is wounded."

"He looked terrified," I murmured, finally raising my eyes to meet his. The overhead streetlights cast sharp shadows across his angular jaw and the faint, dark ink of his chest tattoo visible through the open collar. "Your men didn't have to raise their voices. They just whispered something, and he folded like paper."

"Fear is a very efficient teacher, Khloe," Victor said evenly, stepping closer. He didn't sit down, remaining standing above me like a monument to cold pragmatism. "It prevents wasted effort. If he had come inside, if he had forced the issue, the outcome would have been significantly less pleasant for him—and much louder for you. I chose the quiet option."

"And what about my option?" I stood up, confronting him at eye level, refusing to let him tower over me physically or emotionally. "When do I get a say in how my life is managed? You pull me out of a restaurant, you lock me in a penthouse, and you treat my stalker like an extermination problem. But I'm a person, Victor. I'm not a stray cat you decided to adopt and keep in a cage."

Victor's expression tightened, a flicker of dark intensity crossing his features before smoothing back into that impenetrable mask. He reached out, his fingers catching my chin with a firm, inescapable grip—not aggressive like Liam's had been, but heavy with unyielding resolve. He tilted my face upward, forcing me to hold his gaze.

"You think this is a cage?" he asked, his voice dropping an octave, rich with a low, vibrating danger that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "Look outside, Khloe. Down there, you were prey. Out there, every man with a grievance or an obsession thinks he has a claim on your time, your obedience, your fear. Here, your only obligation is to exist. I don't ask for your submission. I ask for your survival."

"And if I want my freedom back?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. "The messy, dangerous, unpredictable freedom I had before you walked down that restaurant aisle?"

"Then you walk out those doors," Victor replied, his voice chillingly calm. "And the moment you step onto the pavement, the protection ends, and Liam—or a hundred others like him—will be waiting in the dark. Choose wisely, Khloe."
