Chapter 9 - Unraveling the Florida Ledger

With the master suite secured and the fiancée confined to the lower west parlor under guard, the study became the center of operations. I was asked to remain, not as a servant running errands, but as the primary witness whose sharp eye had caught the tiny detail on the pill bottle.

The man in the black suit sat sorting through the recovered financial documents spread across his desk. He looked through a stack of bank statements printed on crisp corporate letterhead, his fingers pausing over a highlighted line of text.

"Dad keeping is in Florida," I repeated softly, remembering the broken phrase I had overheard near the conservatory balcony a week prior—words that had made no sense until the bank routing numbers came to light.

He looked up, his dark eyes narrowing slightly in analytical focus. "Explain what you heard, exactly."

"She was on the phone by the glass doors," I said, stepping closer to the desk to point at a specific routing code on the page. "She was arguing with someone about a trust disbursement. She said that exact sentence—'Dad keeping is in Florida'—meaning the old man's offshore accounts or his physical custody were being manipulated through a proxy nursing home down south while everyone here thought he was simply retired."

He traced the routing number with the tip of a silver pen. "Her father isn't dead or retired in a private club. She placed him in an unlisted facility in Broward County six months ago to strip his voting shares in the family logistics firm. And to do it without interference, she needed to clear out the matriarch here first."

The pieces clicked together with the heavy, unyielding snap of a vault door closing. The poisoned medication wasn't just a petty domestic cruelty; it was the final step in a corporate hostile takeover disguised as an elderly woman's natural decline.

"She used the same pharmacy network to bridge the accounts," I added, noting the matching account numbers on the bottom margin of the medical dispatch form.

The man in the black suit leaned back in his leather chair, letting out a long, slow breath that seemed to clear the tension from his shoulders. He looked at me with a new expression—one stripped of suspicion, replaced by a quiet, calculating respect that felt heavier than any command he had given all morning.
