Chapter 10 - The Quiet Before the Resolution

By late afternoon, the city skyline outside the tall dining room windows had dissolved into a thick, gray coastal fog that clung to the glass like wet wool. The estate was profoundly quiet. The guards had completed their sweep of the perimeter, and the external couriers had collected the final packets of evidence for the federal prosecutors handling the financial fraud charges.
I stood by the long mahogany dining table, carefully wiping down the polished surface where the confrontation had begun less than twenty-four hours earlier. The orange prescription bottle was gone, locked away in the study safe as primary evidence, but the imprint it left on the room remained palpable.
Footsteps approached softly across the parquet floor. I didn't need to look up to know who it was. The man in the black suit stopped a few feet away, holding a single glass of red wine in his hand, though he hadn't touched it.
"The car is waiting for her at the side gates," he said, his voice measured and low. "She'll be on a flight south by evening. She won't be returning."
I paused with the cloth in my hand, looking toward the dark glass where our reflections merged with the lights of the city far below. "And the mistress? How is she taking the news?"
"She's resting," he replied, taking a slow step closer. "Dr. Henderson adjusted her actual prescription back to the proper baseline an hour ago. Her color is already better. She asked about you."
I turned to face him, keeping my hands neatly folded over the front of my black and white dress. "I'll go up and check her room before nightfall."
May you like
"No," he said, his tone softening just enough to alter the entire atmosphere of the room. He set the wine glass down untouched on the side credenza. "For tonight, you aren't on service duty. The household has a new head of domestic security and oversight. A position that requires someone who actually reads the labels."
I held his gaze, the residual tension of the long, brutal night finally dissolving into the quiet certainty of the room. Outside, the city lights flickered through the mist, steady and clear against the dark.
