Chapter 9 - Echoes in the Empty Gallery

The fallout from the board meeting was immediate and violent, though fought in the quiet corridors of power rather than with physical weapons. Within hours of Alessandro losing his voting majority, federal investigators descended upon our corporate offices, but not for the reasons my cousin had hoped. Alessandro, desperate to deflect the mounting evidence of embezzlement and attempted murder, had leaked a series of fabricated financial scandals to federal regulators, attempting to drag me down alongside him in a mutual destruction pact. He believed that by muddying the waters, he could force the authorities into a prolonged stalemate where truth became entirely subjective.

I stood on the glass-walled balcony of my private office, looking down at the rainy Manhattan streets below, when my lead legal counsel stepped into the room with a stack of encrypted hard drives and a grave expression. The hum of the city's evening traffic was muffled by double-paned acoustic glass, but the tension inside the room was thick enough to suffocate.

"They've filed a preliminary inquiry with the SEC, Dominic," my attorney said, setting the files down on the minimalist desk with a heavy thud. "Alessandro's team claims the shell companies tied to the foundation accounts belong to your personal holdings. He's trying to frame you as the mastermind behind his entire embezzlement scheme, and the initial paperwork makes it look startlingly convincing to an outside auditor."

"He's running out of moves, and panic makes a man sloppy," I said, turning away from the rain-streaked glass. I adjusted my black suit jacket, feeling the dark ring on my left hand press firmly against my thumb. "How long before the federal prosecutor realizes the signatures on those offshore accounts are forged?"

"Forty-eight hours, provided we give them the decrypted server logs Sarah helped us pull from the foundation database last night," my attorney replied, tapping a finger against a manila folder. "The digital footprint is undeniable if someone actually looks at the routing numbers. But Alessandro still has friends inside the local field office who can stall the verification process. We need to move faster than his legal briefs can travel through the courts."

I nodded, feeling the steady rhythm of my pulse grounding me against the rising tide of bureaucratic interference. The legal battle was a necessary theatre, but the real war was being fought on the streets where Alessandro's mounting desperation made him increasingly dangerous. He had completely underestimated the resolve of an ordinary mother and a three-year-old girl who had seen too much across a white-clothed dining table. I picked up my secure satellite phone and dialed the safehouse, ensuring Sarah and Lily remained securely locked down while we dismantled the final pillars of my cousin's criminal empire.
