Chapter 6 - Quiet Safehouse on the Hudson

Dawn broke cold and gray over the Hudson River, casting a washed-out light across the Spartan interior of the safehouse. The property sat tucked behind a dense curtain of hemlock and pine, completely invisible from the county road. Inside, the air smelled of damp stone, old paper, and freshly brewed black coffee.
I sat at a heavy oak table in the center of the room, a laptop glowing in front of me while encrypted data feeds scrolled across the screen. Beside the laptop sat the decrypted flash drive Marcus had managed to pull from Alessandro's private office server during the midnight chaos at the estate.
Lily was curled up on an overstuffed armchair near the stone hearth, where a modest fire crackled and spat. She was quietly coloring in a sketchpad Sarah had managed to pack, completely absorbed in her crayons. Sarah stood by the kitchen counter, pouring a cup of coffee with hands that had finally stopped shaking.
"The laboratory report came through an hour ago," I said without looking up from the screen.
Sarah stopped pouring, her posture stiffening. "And?"
" Synthetic paralytic. Fast-acting, undetectable in post-mortem unless specifically screened for heavy metal binders," I said, my voice flat and devoid of emotion. "If I had taken a single sip, my heart would have stopped within ten minutes. The coroner would have ruled it a sudden cardiac event."
Sarah walked over to the table, setting her coffee cup down with a soft clatter. She looked down at the lines of financial code and offshore account numbers glowing on my screen. "And the flash drive? What is all this?"
"This is how Alessandro funded his hostile takeover," I explained, scrolling down to reveal a web of shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands and Panama. "He's been embezzling from the foundation's educational grants for years, funneling millions into private accounts to buy out our regional shipping partners. The poisoning wasn't just personal—it was a corporate execution. With me gone, he would have assumed control of the board by Monday morning."

Sarah crossed her arms, her gaze shifting toward Lily before returning to me. "He tried to murder you over money and power, and he was willing to do it in a room full of people, with children watching."
"He thought he was untouchable," I said, locking eyes with her. "He didn't count on a three-year-old girl paying attention when everyone else was looking away."
