Chapter 1 - A Glass of Dark Red Wine

The crystal chandeliers overhead cast a warm, golden shimmer across the polished mahogany and the crisp white tablecloths of the formal dining hall. All around us, the gentle murmur of elite conversation and the soft clink of silverware created an atmosphere of refined security. Yet my fingers remained frozen around the stem of the heavy crystal goblet. Inside, the dark red wine caught the candlelight, swirling in slow, opaque patterns.

"Sir, please don't drink that," a small, piping voice whispered beside me.

I turned my gaze downward. Looking up at me was three-year-old Lily Carter, her curly blonde hair adorned with delicate white bows that matched the pristine lace of her dress. Her wide, anxious eyes held a depth of worry entirely unsuited for someone so young. My heart tightened in my chest. I had invited her mother, Sarah, to the foundation gala as a gesture of goodwill, never expecting to forge a bond with the child across the long table.

"Why not, little one?" I asked, my voice softening as I crouched slightly toward her level, lowering the glass away from my lips.

Lily gripped the edge of the white tablecloth with both hands, her small fingers bunching the fabric as her distressed expression intensified. Across the long table, illuminated by the flickering candles, my cousin Alessandro sat quietly in his tailored gray suit, resting his hand near a silver dessert knife with an easy, unbothered posture.

"I saw him put something in your glass," Lily whispered, her voice trembling slightly in the quiet air between us. "It's not right. That uncle over there."

The words dropped into the space between us like falling stones. I straightened slowly, my gaze shifting past the candelabras to where Alessandro sat. He offered a slight, polished smile, his fingers resting casually beside the gleaming silver blade. The warning hung heavy in the air. Without a word, I set the wine glass down onto the white tablecloth, the crystal making a soft thud against the linen. I signaled my head of security with a subtle flick of two fingers. The evening had changed, and the hidden war within our family had just broken into the open.
