Chapter 7 - A Mother’s Fear

By afternoon, the tension inside the villa was palpable. Elena sat at the kitchen island, nursing a mug of coffee while watching Mia draw pictures of cats and sailboats with Dante’s security guards in the living room.

“You can’t go to that railyard alone,” Elena pleaded as Dante walked into the room, dressed in tactical dark denim and a heavy black jacket. “Hector Vargas doesn’t negotiate. He’ll bring mercenaries. He’ll kill you the second he gets that key.”

“He won’t get the key,” Dante replied calmly, pouring himself a glass of water. “And I’m not going alone.”

“Dante, please. If something happens to you…” Her voice cracked, unable to finish the thought.

Dante stepped forward, gently lifting her chin so she had no choice but to look into his dark, unwavering eyes. “For seven years, you bore this weight alone. You raised an incredible, brave girl while hiding in the shadows. But you don’t have to hide anymore, Elena. Your battles are my battles now.”

“Why are you risking everything for us after all this time?” she asked, a tear tracing her cheek.

“Because you’re not just an old memory,” Dante whispered, leaning in until their foreheads lightly touched. “You’re the only home I’ve ever wanted. And Mia is my daughter. A father doesn’t run from the wolves; he tears them apart.”

Elena closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. For the first time in years, the crushing anxiety that had lived inside her chest began to recede, replaced by a profound, trembling hope.
