Chapter 7 - The Hidden Alleyway

The door to the dispensary was unlocked, the latch freshly forced open with a thin blade. I pushed it inward, the hinges emitting a faint, metallic squeak that seemed deafening in the dead of night. Inside, the room smelled faintly of antiseptic mixed with the metallic tang of chemical reagents. I flicked on the overhead fluorescent lights, the harsh glare bouncing off rows of glass shelves filled with vials, syringes, and sterilization equipment.

I walked straight to the back counter where the heavy-duty compounding scales were kept. A fine dusting of white powder was scattered across the stainless steel surface—not medication, but raw chemical residue left behind by careless hands in a hurry.

"Look at this," I said, pointing down at the counter. I dipped a cotton swab into the residue and sealed it into a plastic evidence vial. "They aren't just smuggling the poison in through the flowers. They've been using our own dispensary to refine and measure it."

Leo stepped past me, his massive shoulders nearly brushing the doorframe as he surveyed the room. His gaze landed on a heavy wooden medicine cabinet bolted against the back wall. He reached out, gripping the side of the wooden frame, and gave it a firm tug. With a sharp click, the entire cabinet shifted inward on hidden hydraulic hinges, revealing a dark, narrow alcove cut directly into the structural stone of the mansion's foundation.

"A service chute," Leo muttered, shining his flashlight into the narrow opening. "It connects the lower kitchens directly to the upper residential wings. Anyone in the family or high-ranking staff could move through the walls without ever stepping foot in the public hallways."

I leaned in, peering into the dark cavity. Resting on a small wooden ledge inside the secret passage was a heavy glass jar filled with a thick, grayish-white liquid—the unrefined thallium concentrate used to saturate the floral arrangements and the kitchen supplies.

"We have our definitive proof," I said, carefully lifting the heavy jar by its rim and placing it inside my medical bag. "This isn't an outside job, and it's not a random employee. This took inside knowledge of both the estate architecture and our medical inventories."

Leo's jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He closed the hidden door with a soft, solid thud, locking the secret panel back into place. "Julian used to manage the estate logistics before Dante took over the daily operations," Leo said, his voice flat and cold. "He built this route years ago for midnight shipments. He thought nobody remembered."
