Chapter 12 - The Confrontation

The heavy oak doors swung open smoothly, and Julian stepped into the study, adjusting the cuffs of his charcoal-gray suit with practiced casualness. He stopped mid-step as he noticed my presence standing beside the desk, then let his gaze drift down to Dante, seated upright in his wheelchair. Julian’s expression was an immaculate mask of innocent concern, though a faint twitch in his left cheek betrayed his internal calculations.

"Ah, Nurse Rossi is still here," Julian murmured, offering a polite, restrained smile. "I hope my uncle isn't wearing you out. He has a stubborn habit of ignoring medical advice."

"Your uncle was just reviewing a very interesting medical report, Julian," I said, stepping back slightly to give Dante an unobstructed view of the desk.

Julian’s eyes flicked down to the mahogany surface. For the first time, his polished composure cracked. He saw the dark violet test strip lying beside the ledger, and beside it, the small glass vial containing the raw thallium concentrate I had recovered from the dispensary wall. The blood drained visibly from Julian’s face, leaving his skin a pale, sickly gray that contrasted sharply with his dark, slicked-back hair.

"What is this theatrical nonsense?" Julian forced a dry, brittle laugh, though his voice lacked its previous melodic certainty. "Some kind of chemical experiment? Uncle, you shouldn't let staff fill your head with paranoid delusions. You're unwell; your mind is playing tricks on you."

"My mind is clearer than it has been in months, nephew," Dante said, his voice cutting through the room like a cold blade. He gripped the armrests of his wheelchair, his tattooed hands flexing with suppressed power. "For six months, I thought my body was failing. I thought age, stress, and natural decay were finally collecting their debt. But it turns out the rot wasn't coming from inside my bones. It was coming from the cup handed to me by my own family."

Julian took a sharp step backward, his boots scraping against the marble floor near the doorway. He looked toward the exit, but Leo was already standing squarely in the threshold, his massive frame blocking the escape route completely.

"You have no proof," Julian snapped, the mask finally shattering entirely, revealing the panicked coward beneath the tailored suit. "Who are they going to believe? A dying old man in a wheelchair and a hired nurse with a grudge, or the man running the day-to-day operations of this estate? If I go down, the entire family structure collapses with me, and you know it!"

"The family structure survived long before you learned how to pour poison into a teacup, Julian," Dante said softly, leaning forward in his chair. "And it will survive your departure."
