Chapter 11 - The Locked Study

The heavy oak doors of Dante’s private study stood shut against the hallway, guarded silently by Leo, who leaned against the molding with his arms folded across his black-suited chest. When he saw me approach down the corridor, his posture shifted instantly from relaxed to alert. He pushed off the wall, checking the hallway in both directions before turning the brass handle just enough to let me slip inside.

The study was dim, lit only by the pale morning light filtering through leaded glass windows. Dante sat in his metal wheelchair behind a massive mahogany desk, reviewing financial ledgers with a jeweler's loupe. He looked up as I entered, his dark eyes instantly locking onto my face, reading the tension in my posture before I even spoke a word.

"You didn't come back just to check my blood pressure," Dante said, setting the loupe down on the blotter. He leaned back in his chair, his unbuttoned white dress shirt parting slightly to reveal the intricate black ink sprawling across his collarbone and neck. "What did you find in the kitchen?"

I walked straight to the desk and laid the dark violet test strip down on the polished wood beside his ledger. The contrast between the stark white paper and the deep, toxic purple was unmistakable.

Dante stared at the strip for a long, agonizing moment. The silence in the room grew heavy, charged with the realization of betrayal from his own blood. Slowly, an expression of grim, chilling clarity settled over his features. The last traces of doubt vanished, replaced by the cold authority of a man who had built an empire and now watched his own family try to tear it down.

Before Dante could speak, a sharp, double knock echoed against the heavy outer doors of the study.

We both froze.

"Uncle Dante?" Julian’s voice drifted clearly through the thick oak, polite and smooth as silk. "May I come in? I wanted to check on you after our brief misunderstanding at breakfast. We have some important estate portfolios to review before the afternoon associates arrive."

Dante looked from the test strip up to me, his jaw tightening into a hard line. A slow, dangerous smile touched the corners of his mouth—not a smile of warmth, but of a predator locking his jaws around an exposed adversary. He looked past me toward the door and nodded once at Leo.

"Let him in, Leo," Dante said, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling register that brooked no argument. "Let my dear nephew see how well his botanical blend worked."
