Chapter 15 - Standing Together in the Warm Light

Months later, the crisp autumn chill gave way to the glittering lights of a magnificent winter gala hosted in the newly restored grand ballroom of the Grandview Hotel. The crystal chandeliers overhead cast a brilliant, sparkling glow across the polished marble floor where party guests mingled, laughed, and danced beneath towering floral arrangements. There was no deception tonight, no forced isolation, and no cruel games played behind closed doors. Every person in the room was there through genuine connection and mutual respect.
I stood near the edge of the sweeping marble balcony, wearing a simple, elegant emerald-green silk dress that caught the warm light of the chandeliers, looking out over the crowded ballroom floor. The metallic wheelchair, the plaid blanket, and the bitter memories of that night had long since been consigned to the past, replaced by the sturdy reality of our new life together. My hand rested comfortably on the polished brass railing, and a second later, a familiar warmth settled around my shoulders as Ethan stepped up beside me, wrapping his arm securely around my waist.
Ethan followed my gaze out across the ballroom, his dark tuxedo jacket fitting him impeccably, a quiet smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "Penny for your thoughts, partner?" he asked softly, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of my head.
I leaned into his side, resting my head against his shoulder as I watched the happy couples swaying to the distant strains of a live jazz orchestra. "I was just thinking about where we were standing right here in this room a few months ago," I murmured, a soft laugh escaping my lips. "It feels like a lifetime ago."
May you like
"It was a lifetime ago," Ethan agreed, tightening his arm around me and turning his gaze away from the ballroom to look down into my eyes with unwavering devotion. "We burned down the old life, Isabella. And what we built from the ashes is entirely real."
I smiled up at him, lifting my hand to rest gently over his heart, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of a man who had reclaimed his agency, his dignity, and his future. We turned away from the balcony together, stepping back into the warm, golden light of the ballroom, ready to face every tomorrow side by side.
