Chapter 12 - Shadows of Deceit and Final Denials

Sheriff Danvers pushed past Julian with a heavy hand, his badge gleaming beneath the cabin's overhead fixture as he scanned the room with practiced suspicion. "Alright, what's going on here? We received an anonymous high-priority wire transfer flag and an automated distress signal originating from this property."
"Sheriff, thank God you're here," Julian blurted out, instantly shifting into a posture of distressed corporate authority. "This man is my brother, Ethan. He's suffering from a severe neurological disorder that causes psychotic breaks. He slipped away from his medical escort tonight, abducted a hotel employee, and barricaded himself in this cabin. He needs immediate psychiatric detention."
I stepped out from the shadows near the kitchen counter, my hands trembling slightly despite my resolve, and thrust the encrypted silver keycard toward the sheriff. "He's lying, Sheriff. Look at the ledger logs on this drive. Ethan Vance owns every share of this foundation, and Julian and his wife Brooke have been systematically embezzling funds while keeping Ethan chemically immobilized."
Before Danvers could reach for the drive, headlights swept across the front windows again, and the sound of frantic gravel crunching heralded the arrival of a third vehicle. A sleek black sedan parked haphazardly beside the cruisers, and out stepped Brooke, her burgundy evening gown partially covered by a thick wool coat, her face twisted in a mask of calculated panic. She hurried up the porch steps and pushed through the door, immediately rushing toward Ethan with theatrical tears shining in her eyes.
"Ethan! Oh, thank heavens you're safe!" Brooke cried, reaching out to clutch at the lapels of his tuxedo jacket with trembling fingers. "When the nurses called to say you were gone, I was beside myself with worry. That dreadful woman—she must have manipulated you, convinced you to run away—"

Ethan raised his hand, his fingers curling firmly around Brooke's wrist, stopping her mid-motion with cold, unyielding strength. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer weight of his gaze silenced her instantly. "Save the performance, Brooke. The federal prosecutor's office downloaded our complete financial audit forty-five minutes ago. Your accounts are frozen, your access is revoked, and the medical clinic that doctored my charts is already cooperating with investigators."
Brooke stared up at him, her tearful facade cracking into a look of sheer, unadulterated terror as she realized the game was finally over. Sheriff Danvers stepped between them, resting his hand casually on the butt of his sidearm as he nodded to his deputy. "Mr. Vance, I think it's best we escort Ms. Vance and your brother down to the station for formal questioning. Looks like you've got a lot of paperwork to clear up."
