Chapter 11 - The Reckoning at the Foothills

The heavy oak door swung inward with a slow, protesting groan that echoed through the rustic cabin's timber frame. Standing on the threshold was Julian Vance, his tailored cashmere overcoat dusted with pine needles, flanked by two burly private security guards wearing matte-black tactical jackets. Julian’s expression of arrogant triumph faltered the exact second his eyes locked onto Ethan standing upright, steady and completely unassisted in the center of the room. Julian's mouth opened slightly, his pale face draining of what little color it possessed as his gaze dropped instinctively to Ethan's sturdy, planted boots.
"Ethan?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking with genuine disbelief before his professional mask snapped back into place. "What is this? You're—you're supposed to be in a chair. Brooke said the nerve damage was degenerative. How are you standing?"
"By refusing to swallow the pills you and Brooke so carefully provided every morning," Ethan replied, his tone chillingly level as he stepped forward into the dim light of the entryway. He didn't rush or raise his voice, but the sheer physical presence of him—tall, imposing, and entirely free of the frailty they had fabricated—forced Julian's guards to hesitate. "The medical board will find the toxicology reports quite illuminating, Julian. Especially the part detailing synthetic paralytics mixed into my morning coffee."
Julian sneered, recovering his composure as he gestured sharply to the guards beside him. "You're delusional, brother. You've had a mental break, and this hotel maid has clearly enabled your paranoid episode. Grab the drive from him and take them both back to the car. We'll handle this privately."
The two guards lunged forward, their heavy boots slamming against the pine floorboards, but Ethan didn't flinch. As the first guard reached out to grab Ethan's shoulder, the harsh wail of distant police sirens suddenly sliced through the crisp mountain air. Red and blue strobe lights began to paint the pine trees outside, flashing violently through the cabin windows. Julian spun around toward the gravel drive, his face twisting in sudden panic as a marked county sheriff's cruiser slid to a halt right behind their sleek SUVs.

"You called the local police?" Julian hissed, whirling back to face Ethan with pure venom in his eyes. "You absolute fool! You've ruined everything we built!"
"I simply filed an automated emergency legal failsafe," Ethan said smoothly, just as heavy footsteps mounted the front porch steps. "Sheriff Danvers is a very thorough man, Julian. And he's already received the forensic accounting records proving you and Brooke drained every corporate account before staging my paralysis."
