Chương 8 - The Corner of the Room

The sprawling ballroom hummed with the high-society pulse of wealth and polished pretense. Waiters in crisp black vests navigated the sea of round tables covered in immaculate white tablecloths, balancing silver trays laden with half-empty champagne flutes and delicate canapés. Underneath the warm banquet lighting, guests laughed and clinked glasses, entirely oblivious to the cold, calculated crime that had unfolded near the floral arches less than an hour ago.
Deputy Miller walked with a measured, heavy-footed stride, cutting a sharp path through the center aisle. I kept my eyes locked on the back of his dark uniform jacket, using his broad frame as a shield against the curious stares of distant relatives and family friends. My left side still throbbed with a dull, heavy numbness, but the sheer adrenaline coursing through my veins kept my posture rigidly straight.
"Where are they?" Miller muttered, his head swiveling slightly as he scanned the perimeter of the room.
I didn't need to look far. Near the head table, draped in white linen and framed by cascading pink and white roses, my new husband stood talking with a cluster of college friends. A few feet away, holding court near the edge of the dance floor, was Mama Eleanor. She wore her dark navy blue lace gown like royal armor, her gray hair pinned up in an immaculate bun that caught the amber glow of the chandeliers. In her right hand, she held a fresh crystal flute of sparkling wine, her fingers adorned with heavy heirloom rings. She looked every bit the benevolent matriarch, smiling warmly as she accepted congratulations from an elderly cousin.
"Right there," I whispered, my voice tight as I stepped beside Miller. "She’s standing by the base of the bridal arch."
Miller adjusted the utility belt at his hip, his expression hardening into professional skepticism. He didn't rush, knowing that an abrupt scene in the middle of a crowded reception would only give Eleanor the social cover she so expertly manipulated. Instead, he took a deliberate breath and began walking straight toward her, parting the crowd with a quiet, authoritative presence that commanded immediate attention.

As we approached, Eleanor turned her head. Her dark eyes, sharp and calculating beneath finely lined lids, landed instantly on me, and then drifted down to the uniformed deputy walking at my side. For a single, fleeting micro-second, the polished, beatific smile faltered at the edges, replaced by a flash of cold, calculating calculation. Then, just as quickly, the mask settled back into place, smooth and impenetrable.
"Deputy Miller," Eleanor said smoothly, her voice carrying an effortless, patrician warmth that masked the steel beneath. "I wasn't aware the county constabulary made social calls at charity weddings. Are we facing some sort of local disturbance?"
