Chương 15 - The Breaking of the Glass

The final signatures were dry by noon. We walked out of the courthouse together, side by side down the broad stone steps, into the crisp afternoon air. The street was quiet, lined with parked cars and the ordinary motion of a town that had gone about its business while our world collapsed and rebuilt itself.
A silver taxicab idled at the curb, its engine humming softly. I stopped at the bottom of the steps, looking down at the pavement where the shadows of the morning had burned away into clear, unfiltered sunlight. David stopped with me, his hand resting hesitantly near his pocket before he dropped it to his side.
"Where are you going?" he asked softly, the question hanging between us without demand or expectation.
"I have an apartment in the city," I said, my voice steady and clear. "Just a small place. I’m going back there to pack my things, reset my life, and figure out who I am when I'm not playing a part in someone else's design."
David nodded slowly, a small, sad acknowledgment passing across his features. He didn't ask me to stay, and he didn't offer empty promises. For the first time, our relationship wasn't managed by an invisible script dictated from a velvet-lined chair. It was raw, honest, and entirely our own to navigate from scratch.
"Can I call you?" he asked.

"Give it time," I replied, opening the taxicab door and sliding onto the cool vinyl seat.
I reached into the small beaded clutch sitting on my lap—the same one I had carried into the ballroom yesterday—and pulled out the small glass vial I had retrieved from the service basement. With a deliberate, steady motion, I rolled down the window and dropped the empty glass cylinder into a public recycling bin on the corner as the cab pulled away from the curb. The chime of the metal hitting the bin was sharp and clean, carrying no echo, no warning, and no fear. The wedding reception was a lifetime behind me, and the road ahead, however uncertain, belonged entirely to my own footsteps.
